Heading to Texas

I live North of San Francisco, and we are planning a trip to Texas. I was planning on going To Needles , Ca via 99 to Highway 40 and then using Highway 10 to somewhere around Las Cruces. Fairly new to all this, are there any vehicle restrictions around 580 through Oakland ? Has anyone gone this way, not sure what to expect.
