Hiking The Wave

Guess who got a permit to The Wave for the end of March?! THIS GUY!

Any tips/recommendations/suggestions?

My only recommendation is take lots of photos and post them here. Congratulations!

Yeah, my brain is now on overload as to what cameras to take! I do 99% of my shooting on my phone but I do own a nice Nikon. But then it gets into which lenses to carry and more!

But I’m excited. I’ve been sharing videos with the wife and son to see if they’re up to the hike. If not, I’ve got a couple of friends picked out who would gladly do it with me.

I am envious of you. I few years ago we were staying in Kanab for a week, there was a BLM Office within walking distance of the campground. I went every morning and entered the lottery for a Wave permit no luck. If you are gonna be in that area for a while a nice hike is Wire Pass Trail to Buckskin Gulch.

I definitely want to do the Buckskin Gulch hike as well! We were in the Kanab area a few years back, I wanted to apply for Wave permits but got scared off by the overall 6+ mile hike. I just wasn't in shape for it. I really can't believe that I got it on my first attempt at online permits. Though, hilariously- it completely screwed up our travel plans of being back in Florida by April.

I won 4 slots thinking it was going to be me, my wife, my son, and a buddy. Everything changed and it ended up being me, 2 friends, and one of their kids.

So, here's a link with a total of 49 pictures and videos:
https://imgur.com/gallery/2WjKfTw

But, here's a couple of highlights.

Walking on angled slickrock to get to the Wave:

The Wave itself:

Me:

In the midst of the perfect lines were batches of chaos:

And then, after exploring the Wave, we went looking for some of the other neat features. The Second Wave, Top Rock Arch (didn't make it as the hike to it was too high of risk than we were prepared for), the Alcove, Melody Arch, Big Mac, and Dinosaur Tracks!

The Second Wave:

The Alcove:

Melody Arch, which is really an arch, an alcove, and a window to the canyon:

Big Mac, we decided that we were getting tired and it wasn't worth hiking up to closely. So here's an overly zoomed in picture of the top part of it.

And then real dinosaur tracks!

We were on the hike for about 10 hours. We left the trailhead at about 7:50am and got back right at 6:00pm. My GPS says he hiked about 9.5 miles for a total of about 27,000 steps. What I don't have is a good indicator of our elevation changes because it was a lot!

Absolutely stunning! I'm sure I'll apply again when we come back through this area.

I really want to hike Buckskin Gulch which is in the same area (same trailhead, actually). It is running dangerously right now- in fact, there were a couple of deaths a couple of weeks ago. So next time...

Very cool pictures for us less adventurous to enjoy. My wife would never contemplate that type of hike.

A lot of it was optional. Stuff I wanted to do since I was already in the area of the hike (and it was in the same permit-only area). But just the hike to the Wave was totally doable by most anyone.
