hwy 67 in colorado

Looking for advice about hwy 67 in Colorado.
Thinking about taking it up to Cripple Creek from US 50 with our 5th wheel.
So tired of the interstates. LOL

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I have never been on SH 67 south of Cripple Creek -- SH 67 forms the eastern border of Mueller State Park, which is wonderful. But, I believe that it actually ends at Victor, where it becomes CR 67. That is, it changes from a State Highway to a County Road. This road is also called Phantom Canyon Road all the way south until it intersects with US 50. South of 50, it might turn back into SH 67.

But, the real key is whether or not CR 67 between US 50 and Victor can handle a 5er. I did a real quick google search and my conclusion was that trailers are not a good idea.

Better off staying on US 50 west past Canon City, then CR 9, SH 11, and then SH 1.

Good luck.

67 turns into phantom canyon road and has a maximum length restriction of 25 feet. I personally would not take anything other than a small popup camper on it.

It is a beautiful drive and worth leaving the camper at a campsite while doing it.

Do not take 67 from 50. Terrible road. Go to Colorado Springs take 24 w to 67 @Divide to Cripple Creek. I am from there.

That's the way I'd go, but the OP stated that he wanted to avoid I25 as much as possible ... and would be on US 50. It takes longer, but the route I mentioned keeps him on 50 and circles back around to Cripple Creek.

Depending on where he's coming from and what types of roads he wants, one of several routes might work best for him. But, I think we all agree that CR 67 is not one of them.

Googlemaps is a great resource for planning such routes. I do this for motorcycle rides, when I'm trying to find non-freeway routes.

Good luck.

I would not take the Phantom Canyon Road with my 5th wheel even though I have traveled it in my trucks a dozen or more times. It is an old narrow-gauge railroad grade--the Florence & Cripple Creek RR--that was abandoned after a flash flood that wiped out a lot of the track. It has several tunnels and tight hairpins and a relatively steep grade just south of Victor. If I wanted to drive it while on US 50, I would camp around Florence-Penrose-Canon City, then drive it in my truck.

You may be interested in the "US 50" and "US 24" sections of my blog HERE.

Last fall, I took a car club on a road trip from Colorado Springs to Florissant Fossil Beds NM to Salida using the reverse of the route described by 67L48 above. It is a great road, all paved, through a lot of sparsely settled ranchland. It would make a scenic loop back to Canon City if you do drive north on the Phantom Canyon Road.
