As it turns out, this rail system has a low-voltage rail-break notification/protection system meant to notify the operators if there is rail damage. It, too, was not working or ignored.

As for the bridge damage, it was collateral damage caused by heavily-loaded rail cars piling up on and crashing into the bridge structure. There's no evidence that the bridge made any contribution to the accident...other than collapsing under the onslaught of derailed coal cars.

"Investigators are working to determine the cause of the broken rail and why warning systems designed to alert the crew to the track condition failed. "

Not all true. As I mentioned and you apparently did not read through the whole post. Had a rail been broken prior to train approach a red signal would have been displayed prior to approach the area. This was not the case so as mentioned the rail could have broken under the train if this actually is the cause. A indication of rail broken under train would have showed rail end batter on receiving end of rail . Other factors include broken axle or wheel. So paper is trying to determine cause and also FRA is on the site also. Also when train derailed you will see more rails broken by impact of derailment. Later RJD

Semi driver killed so investigation and cleanup can take a while. CSP is advising "extended closure".
I25 is open again in both directions.
