I-25 closed due to train derailment

Both directions clised at Pueblo.

https://www.cbsnews.com/colorado/new...rth-of-pueblo/

Semi driver killed so investigation and cleanup can take a while. CSP is advising "extended closure".

It sure looks like it will take a while to get this cleaned up. RIP to the poor truck driver. Wrong place at the wrong time I guess.

A little irony. The Transportation Technology Center (TTC) is located in Pueblo where they study effects of wear on train components and infrastructure.

Apparently this bridge was overlooked.

Could be a bridge issue could be equipment failure that caused the bridge to fail. Most bridge failures are caused by the derailment rather than the derailment caused by the bridge failure but it does happen. I'm familiar with the area as it was in my district of responsibility before I retired from the agency with railroad regulatory oversight.

Update:

Authorities have now stated I-25 will remain closed "for the foreseeable future".

BROKEN RAIL: https://www.denverpost.com/2023/10/1...ken-rail-ntsb/

This will be very expensive for the owner of these tracks. The list of potential litigants is VERY long. And it was preventable.

One might ask if an annual inspection is enough on a 60+ year old RR bridge. Especially one seeing mile-long coal trains at least daily.

Also worth asking why the equipment supposed to detect rail failure didn't.

Preventable is a premature assumption unless you know something. With NTSB involved there shouldnt be any conclusions released unless they do it and it's way too early for conclusions.

As a retired track inspector I agree.

Bridge may be old but they where always over built to handle the days of steam. There is no detector track side for broken rails only for hot box dragging equipment detectors. BTW this is signal territory had a rail been broken prior to derailment train would have had a red signal and stop prior. If it is truly a broken rail then it most likely broke under train while moving which occurres at times. Railroad does ultrasonic testing of rail at least yearly. Later RJD

So true also other factors can be considered such as broken axle or wheel. Later RJD

Typical wreckage pattern for broken rail or car component failure. Poor trucker never stood a chance.

Bridge was built when the interstate was constructed in the 1960s. Records are being checked to see whether State Dept of Highways or Santa Fe Railway built the bridge.
