Idaho Falls to Yellowstone

Hello all, this coming Tuesday, we leave Idaho Falls for the next leg of our trip around this beautiful country of ours. I have two routes via Google to our destination near Yellowstone. #1 takes me up I-15 to I-90 and W to 89. #2 takes me up 20 to 191 and I believe thru the Park, to 89 and up the Grand Loop Rd to our campgrounds just N of Emigrant. We’re towing a 26’ TT. I’d prefer to travel thru the park and enjoy the scenery and also stop along the way. Is the park route on 89 advisable this time of year, and are there any concerns with steep or narrow areas. Thanks in advance for any information. Happy camping and safe travels to all.

20 which turns into West Entrance Rd to Grand Loop Rd north to your Emigrant CG. About 190 miles. Don't know about the snow but think there could be a lot and sometimes the certain roads in Yellowstone are closed. Better check. Your #1 is mostly interstate.

My suggestion would be to take 26 into Wyoming, and then jump on 89 to 191 through Grand Teton and Yellowstone and back onto 89 through Gardiner. This will take you through Jackson, which is a cool (albeit touristy) town, the tetons, West Thumb, Old Faithful, Mammoth, and out Gardiner. I would call Yellowstone first just to make sure the roads are open though.

EDIT: Never mind, it appears that road is closed. Check out current road conditions here https://www.nps.gov/yell/planyourvisit/conditions.htm

Thanks for the link on road closures. But if I’m reading it correctly 89 which is referred to as the Grand Loop Rd is open as well as the North Entrance Rd. Or am I missing something.

Check road reports but Hwy 20 to West Yellowstone and into the Park and on out through Gardiner to your camp in Emmigrant is the shortest route. Leave early and expect all day doing it. Grab a bite in West or eat at a pullout in the park. There are several interesting thermal features along that route. Paint Pots comes to mind as a good one for lunch stop.

Thanks Blackrock. I like that route and the weather on travel day looks great. Just wondering about any steep grades or narrow roads on that route. We’ve got all day to enjoy the trip as we usually leave early in the morning when we travel.

The roads within the Park are good but narrow but for the most ppart traffic flows well. Going down through Mammoth Hot Springs to Gardiner there are some gentle sweeping switchbacks. If traffic stacks up behind you use common courtesy and pull over when you can.

Here are two web links for your visit. Everything looks clear and all roads are open, with the exception of the road from Tower Fall to Canyon Village.

Have a great time!
