Interstate 2

How steep are the grades, leaving from st regis, montana to sweetgrass border crossing. The 2 nd option is going down to Helena then back up.

Need advice to the best route

We've done both with our trailer and didn't find them that bad. We have a 26' bumper pull and a half ton. It is the only way we usually come home from Kalispell, except we cross into Canada at Chief Mountain. When we go to Great Falls, we have taken it across to the I-15 with no issues..

Not sure if it is in your plan, but from East Glacier to St. Mary's it's under construction and there are quite a few spots that are very rough and missing pavement. This was a couple of weeks ago.

Merely a technical point but there is no "Interstate 2". You are referring to US-2 which is a really old highway, much of which is 2-lane. Grades are manageable for the most part as it follows a railroad route across the northern part of the US. You should have no trouble as even though it's not an Interstate it is still a major route. Just be careful on parts with no passing lanes as people can be a little, scratch that, a lot crazy and pass on corners.
The portion in Western Washington is one of the deadliest pieces of road in the entire state.

That aside, it goes through some beautiful country.

Well, we have drove through there during day time. It was pretty good for 2 lane hwy, cut down my driving time, hardly any steep grades. They have done some road improvements. I had to take this route due to road closure down by Helena. My advice is travel during the day time, very scenic drive.

If it's an interstate, no grades over 6%.

Well, actually there is. But getting to it requires no small amount of travel over the water. the H2 on Oahu in Hawaii is the main Interstate highway for the state of Hawaii.

I've put many miles on the H2, but US2 sounds much more scenic. Good luck on your travels.
