South on 101, 299 East to Interstate 5 South. Depending on where you are headed in Lake Tahoe can depend on if you take 80 or 50 off I-5. Highway 80 is garbage as far as road condition although it's two lanes, 50 is in better condition in addition to less traffic; however, it is single lane. I live off 50 and use it all the time, I avoid 80 as much as possible.

Moved thread from the Dynamax sub-forum to the On the Road/Travel Chat section's Western USA sub-forum since the OP's questions are specific to that sub-forum and not specific to Dynamax.

Definitely take I 80 . It is a minimum of two lanes East and no current construction. Are you staying in the KOA in Boomtown? If yes it is next to Cabelas and not far from Reno but not really that close to Tahoe.

Verdi and Mogul are quite a ways from the Lake.
Crossing the Coast Range from Gold Beach is not so easy. Route 299 is the most direct link but it is windy and up and down. I-5 is direct but not so scenic.

If it were me I would take Route 44 from Redding and connect with US 395 south to Reno and then west on I-80.

Your question is a reasonable one because there are so many options.

Well we traveled 299 East from 101 to I-5, then South to I-80. 299 was NOT fun and if I were to do it again I would go back North and take 42 East to I-5. I-80 out of Sacramento had some of the worst ruts in the right lane all of the way over Donner Pass to the Nevada border.

Glad you made it. Yep, I-80 in California over the Sierra Nevada Mtns has been terrible for over 15 years. I usually move to a smoother lane and if I get stopped, I will just see whether the CHP officer or judge will agree that it's unsafe to drive in the right lane. We have high road taxes and some of the worst roads!!! I believe the CA politicians have been redirecting highway funds to pay for many of CA's social programs. Just my opinion.

The Coast Range is hard to cross. There are no good ways but 299 is the most direct and shortest.

Hwy 299 was not a lot of fun for me back in the day. I'd look at south on 101 to Hwy 20 north of Ukiah and head east towards Hwy 5. There's a nice spot to gas up and stretch your legs at the Hwy 20 & Hwy 29 roundabout. Continue east on 20 to Williams and then south on Hwy 5. I agree with others that, regardless of the crappy roads, Hwy 80 would work best for you. Just take your time.

US Route 50 is much more interesting than I-80.

NOJO, I couldn't agree with you more based on my June 2022 visit to California. Your point on where the money goes is spot on IMHO and pretty close to what I opined after visiting. My DW and I are in no hurry to return, ahhh, no I don't think we will ever return. Beautiful, Yes. The Rest, No.

To be fair, my home state of New York is the step child to California and no better and in many ways worse.
