November Visit to Utah Canyon Land?

Is the month of November too late to visit the canyon parks in Utah because of weather or any other reason? Would be traveling from Texas.

Looking at towed trailer or MH?? I would be careful to be very flexible in my plans at that time. Could end up with storms and a couple feet of snow in the 7-8000 foot elevations, or temps down to zero. At the same time, we have had years where it never snowed until 12/1. Staying in the I-15 corridor and driving up thru the parks daily might be a better option.

We visited Moab in November a few years ago, including Arches, Canyonlands, etc. It is a perfect time to visit! Some things are starting to shut down, but there was plenty to do. Perhsps it was a fluke, but the weather was perfect.

We did Bryce Canyon in October. Got down to 20’s at night an up to 50 once the sun was up

This is Bryce Canyon on May 24th 2019 and Mesa Verde on May 20th 2019. Both of these photo’s were taken at a higher elevation but I would not tow my 26’ trailer to that area in November. And I live in the snow belt of Eastern Washington State and drive in the snow and ice all winter.

Made a trip to Zion (and Grand Canyon) in a truck camper last November and it was great. Also pretty cold at night and in the morning. Agree with previous post, though, in that you need to be flexible and have a backup plan that time of year.

Early November is a great time to go, but watch the weather, if the weather patterns look good with no storms in the forecast, then go. October is better, but with the same precautions with weather. I live in Utah and some of the best trips have been in winter and snow shoeing in the canyons.

The Moab/St. George (Zion, Canyonlands, Arches) are pretty good in the winter. We've pulled a trailer thru there (Moab) in December and it was fine. BUT! Getting in there may be a problem if the weather gets bad. All of the roads going in cross high, windswept plateaus that can get nasty in a snow storm with highways being closed because of snow drifts. I recommend watching the weather very closely right up to the time of departure. The highway to Bloomfield & Farmington NM from Bernalillo crosses the Continental Divide and can get a lot of snow as can the highway from Cortez CO to Monticello UT. That plateau is at 7000 ft elevation and frequently gets snowed shut. If you do decide to go, get tire chains fitted for both truck and trailer in case you must travel thru snow-packed highways

November is a little later than we would recommend touring the NP's in Utah. We have done so in late October, and had a memorable visit to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon just before the snows began to fall. All the meadows north of the rim were filled with wild turkeys migrating, and the Aspens were in full autumn color. Spectacular.

If you decide to go, I would recommend staying at freeway close RV Parks such as Shady Acres in Green River, UT, just off I-70 with easy access to Arches and Canyonlands NP's; and Zion River RV Resort just outside the south entrance to Zion NP. If snow falls the roads are often cleared by mid-day, and the snowfall really enhances the beauty of the parks.

Here's a brief rundown on my plans: Dallas to Carlsbad, to Albuquerque, to Follow Lake (Show Low), to Grand Canyon, to Zion, to Bryce, To Arches, over to Quay Co., down to Antlers lodge in Creede Co and then a final stop in Palo Duro canyon in TX before heading back to Dallas. - 25 days

We went to Zion and Kodachrome State Park end of October/first of November last year. Zion was perfect, cold at Kodachrome.


we also went to Bryce a few years ago this same time and got 6" snow one night.

We camped in the sedona area early in last Nov. We came home on the 40 and stopped at the GC for the train ride up & back. The overnight temps were in the 20s. Snowed the following week.

Mid-September should be just about optimum weather for the Utah/Grand Canyon/et. al. trip. Keep in mind, if you set up camp at Zion River RV Resort nearest Zion NP, you can make easy day trips to Bryce, Cedar Breaks, and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Keeps you from having to break camp and setup at a new site for each visit. Requires that you have a tow vehicle if trailering, or a "Toad" behind your motor home.
