For Western lore fans, another reason to go to Buffalo, Wy. Home to the Johnson County Cattle Wars (story behind movie Heaven's Gate) and the Hole in the Wall Gang hung out nearby. Lots of western history nearby with the Little Bighorn battle ground not too far away.

FWIW, I would pick my farthest North and West travel destination and head there first. Then work my way back home, stopping along the way back as I got forced out of the cold and snow.

When winter is approaching I follow that plan so I get to enjoy ALL of my trip and not have to cut it short because of an early blizzard, etc. Once you hit the Rocky Mountain area snow can not only come early, it can come in huge amounts. When I moved my wife to Colorado in the mid 90's (after out house was finished) "Mother Nature" dumped over 2' of snow in mid October with 5' drifts in our street. NOBODY in the greater Denver area moved for most of the week and it was even worse in the mountain and plains area (where snow drifts were monumental).

Hi Jim bob. Sounds like you’re laying down some plans for a real nice trip!
On our trip back to Michigan from Florida last winter we took US 82 west from Tipton GA to US 231 into the Montgomery AL area. Although not a limited access expressway it was mostly 4 lane and with light traffic. You also drive thru some beautiful southern towns complete with plantation style homes and parks in the down town areas.
I travel pulling a 5th wheel and for a quick overnight stay we stay in any “free” or cheap spots we can find. We always call ahead and ask if they allow rv overnight parking and grab supplies or a meal.
If you have time I wouldn’t miss Rocky Mountain National Park and on your way thru South Dakota don’t miss Mt Rushmore and Badlands National Park.
I think you would find Minnesota and Wisconsin beautiful with fall colors at that time of year. Yes once every few years they may get a freak 2-3 inches but if you watch the weather you could head south at the first hint of bad weather.

I have to say, Thank You All
I knew I would get good suggestions and ideas. But you guys went out of your way to help, posting here on line and so many private messages going into detail, routes places to see and places to not miss that I would have never thought of. A lot of people reminded me of something I did not think of when I asked for help, the weather! I would like to make the trip sooner trying to avoid any bad weather but because of some health problems my doctor is not going to say ok for almost 2 months. After that my wife has to visit her mother for a month (97 years old). So I am going to try and recover soon and get my wife to her moms a couple weeks sooner. Now or in the spring, we Will go!
(Dodge City is a must, I won’t make the trip with out going there)

If you are really into Old West history, don't miss Bent's Fort NHS in La Junta (just a few miles north of US 50 in Colorado); Ft. Laramie NHS, WY; and Little Bighorn Battlefield NM. Also plan to stop for dinner at the Sheridan Hotel (Buffalo Bill Cody, original proprietor) in Sheridan, WY on your way from Buffalo to Little Bighorn.

Unfortunately the gambling industry in Deadwood, SD, has changed the character of the historic town so much that it won't look much like anything you have seen in Western movies or TV shows. But the Black Hills are still worth a visit on your way home if you haven't seen Mt. Rushmore, Wind Cave NP, Jewel Cave NM, and Crazy Horse. You can also drive through buffalo herds at Wind Cave and its next-door neighbor, Custer State Park.

After leaving the Black Hills, head for Nebraska. You might want to stop at Ft. Robinson State Park and campground (where Crazy Horse was killed);Scott's Bluff NM on the Oregon Trail; and Buffalo Bill's Ranch in North Platte.

Finally, if you have any interest in railroad history, particularly the Transcontinental Railroad through Wyoming, be sure to visit the Cheyenne Depot Museum and take the optional roundhouse tour. You will see huge operating steam engines that served on the Union Pacific and are now used on excursion trains.

As above, Cody WY is a must. Of course, Yellowstone Park. But if there in summertime, try the Top of the World CG near Cooke City on the Beartooth Highway. Leave the TT behind to follow the hwy to Red Lodge MT. The scenery is superb, but the hwy is closed over half of the year.

We went to southern Wyoming a few summers ago about the 1st of August and I remember running the heater to take the chill out early in the mornings.
