Recent WA to Yellowstone & Grand Teton NP Trip

This is a photo heavy post but for good reason, it's our biggest trip to date! Last weekend, we returned from a 14 night, 5 state, 2,277 mile trip to Yellowstone NP & Grand Teton NP. Our friends joined us and we camped side by side each night.

We live in Western WA and wanted to do a loop to see the sites.

Our route, travelled I-90 out, I-84 returning.

Yes. It was my wife, 3 boys (12, 9 & 3) myself and our friends with their 14 year old daughter. So fun to see these great features through the kids' eyes.

My F250 has the 6.2 gas engine. Being a '16, it was the last year before Ford raised the torque at a lower RPM. All in all, I was very happy with the truck's performance. The last pic is the overall #'s for the trip. Our trailer weighs 7,500 loaded and the bed of the truck probably had about 500lbs of gear plus the topper on the back. My MPG guess was pretty accurate. Before the trip I budgeted for 7.5 MPG towing and some fuel for running around. Based on the miles, I guessed a fuel cost of $5.25 per gallon at $1,491 total. In the end, fuel averaged $5.20 per gallon and we spent $1,497 total. Diesel was consistently $1 more per gallon everywhere.

With climbing the passes, it kept the truck/trailer moving at the speed limit as I let it rev up into it's peak power. The transmission never got too hot and I let it pick the gear it wanted. Climbing grades, it was happy in 3rd gear and sounded good.

The only real crazy portion of the entire trip was the 10 miles or so up and down Teton Pass in WY into ID. IT IS STEEP!!! At mostly a curvy, 10% grade, it started at 6200' and ended somewhere near 8400'. The 3 miles up were spent in 1st gear at 35mph and the descent was again in 1st gear, going about 32 mph. Any faster up or down would have resulted in a wreck.

If you have any other specific questions, feel free to ask. I wont BS ya but give honest answers about my experience with the 6.2.

A beautiful travelog! Thank you for sharing your journey. Did you encounter any issues with the aftermath of the flooding last month?

We just did 6500 miles out your way.

Recommend Bozeman hot springs (cg attached to hot springs) for "next time".

Yes and no.

The floods happened on 6/12 and we left on vacation 6/26. We were supposed to arrive in West Yellowstone 6/27 and stay until 7/3. In an effort to adjust, we stayed in Three Forks 6/27 - 6/29 and West Yellowstone 6/29 - 7/3. With the license plate system the NPS had in place, we were able to enter Yellowstone 6/29, 7/1 & 7/3.

In all, we were able to see all of the Southern Loop and and the south entrance. The limited access and people cancelling reservations meant low volumes of visitors, no traffic and easy movement throughout the park. In all honesty, I wish they did the odd/even plate system all the time.

We are already planning a trip back in '24 or '25 for just West Yellowstone. I can live without seeing Jackson again.

Many thanks

Clark,

I want to thank you for this thread. We have a long round robin trip planned beginning next month and Yellowstone figured prominently. We had revised the trip based on the flooding when we thought it was not going to be worth while to go there.

Based on this thread we revised it again to include Yellowstone NP. Not as long as we had originally planned but we are quite happy that it is going to be somewhat doable. Without this thread we would have bypassed it altogether.

So happy it has helped you! We were in the same boat and almost scrapped the whole trip. A little change in plans and it was totally worthwhile. We are already planning a return to West Yellowstone in the next few years. If you'd like, I'd be happy to share our itinerary to show the places we stayed.

That would be helpful for any future trip but this one is a 6 week, 5600 mile Odyssey and we have 5 days at YNP.

We had originally planned 8 days at Yellowstone. After the flooding we had altered our plans to go to the Great Salt Lake and Crater Lake, OR instead. Now we have those 5 days and still time to visit Crater Lake but no time to make any other detours on this trip.

We are still VERY grateful you posted this thread
