That can cause problems also by doubling the torque to the rear end. Also many hubs are not designed to have the axle portion of the hub spun while disconnected. Third not all trucks have 2 speed transfer cases. Having been in the truck repair business for over 52 years I have seen what can happen, and I know how the hubs are built internally. While one may get away with it short term it is not a good practice.
I don't know where the idea that the gas engine had to run at 5000 to get peak torque, more like 3200 rpm for the Ford and 2400 rpm for the Dodge V-10.

My '99 Ford had manual locking hubs. I could use low range with no damage.

I never been on the 36 but have traveled on the 299 in our SUV. Some parts sharp turns, but they are wide. Only issue i see are cars pushing you from behind. Other then that, it’s a beadutful route.
