Has anyone pulled a 5er on RT 1, along the west coast? If so, would you do it again? We're seriously considering a trip along that route, into WA, then turning east to ID.

Route 1 or 101?
If 101 I have not but I know several people that have, none of them have sad anything bad.
Are you going to run 20, 26 or I-84 east to Id.

We haven't looked at a map! Central ID will be our destination - whatever the route.

Hope you're planning it for next year. Kinda late to be going up 1 this time of the year and then heading east into Idaho. Might run into some bad weather.

Generally it is not bad before Thanksgiving after that it becomes day to day.

But then you can use this to help, I do.

As I posted above I have not towed but lots of guys I work with have, two of them were over there in July of this year and they said it was good fun.

I plan on making it over there in May or June with the FW.

I was on 101 in Or. from Coosbay to Lincoln City about two years ago and saw nothing at that time that would be a problem.

One suggestion I have is if you plan on staying some place for awhile that you get some No Damp or Damp Rid but it in a pan of some type and put it on the counter.

Lots of RV parks, some are within walking distance of the Pacific.

depends on which section of Highway 1 you're talking about.

it varies widely, section to section.
the sections most often advised for long RV'ers to avoid, is the section between Hearst Castle and Carmel and the section between Fort Bragg and Leggett.

but you aren't saying which part of the West Coast.

Highway 1 runs with 101 most of the way. only a few sections split off and return back to 101. the ones above are the only sections on the West Coast generally discouraged for large RV's.

you really need to look at a map and determine if you're talking about 101 or 1.

Consider reversing the loop or making a figure 8.
It is MUCH nicer to drive from north to south on the Oregon coast.
There are so many, many pullouts, viewpoints, points of interest, etc on the west side of the road and the views will be soooo much nicer.
Some areas have tremendous traffic and it can be extremely difficult to cross from the northbound lane to an exit or pullout - AND getting out of a parking area trying to cross the southbound lane to get back to a northbound lane can test any Saint's patience.
The Oregon coast deserves at least 2 weeks and a month would be better.
5 to 7 days could easily be spent at Ft. Stevens CG, the fort proper and the surrounding NW part of the state.

I agree with Bikendon on the Ft Bragg section We towed a small TT on it and it was stressful. My wife planned to bike it. OMG! glad she didn't.

You should be fine on the rest of 1 and 101. Just take your time. We covered as little as 60 miles some days.

Where are you planning on joining Hwy 1? Since you're in Texas, I presume So. California.
Being pretty familiar with that route, I'd be concerned in a couple of areas with a 36' fiver.
What do you want to see? Where would you like to stay? A lot of CG's in California require several months advance reservations...

Your trailer will not make #1, Their are hair pin turns and s turns and solid mts. next to you going north if you are going south then you have a long way down when you get close to the edge. Their is really not many places to buy fuel let alone diesel. You still have to get off of #1 to do that. Good luck it's would be a first that I heard. I lived their for 25 years you will differently not going to make the turn out of SF. If you make the turn and a car is coming the other way someone is going into the Pacific. It is impossible to do, it's hard enough driving a car and passing each other. That's without all the horseshoe turns and cut backs. But You will enjoy the view. If your able to take your eyes off the road long enough. Take #101

What I've read on this forum is exactly WHY I asked these questions! So, because of this information, we will be able to make informed decisions. Obviously, our 5er isn't equipped a tiller,an, so S turns are out! It looks like the best idea would be to stay on 101, drop the 5er at a CG, THEN go see the coast! Unless, of course there are some areas to and along RT 1 that are safe.

A Google Earth look will reveal that you can't do it. Glenn is right, I've only driven a short distance around SF on Hwy 1 in an IH Scout in 1981 and it is not for the faint hearted. You cannot pull a trailer of any length the full length of 1.

You will have trouble with just your truck trying to negotiate some of the switchbacks, etc.

We pulled our 5er north on HWY-1 this summer. We got on HWY-1 just north of San Francisco at Bodega Bay and went all the way to Seaside, OR, which is almost to the WA border. We took more than 2 weeks to do it. There are a few places where it is tight, but easily passable. The road surface is not good in many places, but you should not be in a hurry anyway.

Be sure to take the Avenue of the Giants! Those huge Redwood trees are a sight to see.

We turned east at Astoria, OR and went to Mt. Saint Helens. If you have not been there, it is a must see.

I have not pulled the 5er on HWY-1 south of San Francisco, although we did run the small Class C MH there in the south direction a few years ago with no issues. We even went across the Golden Gate bridge and through SF. I would not recommend it with a 5er, but I guess it could be done.

People take roads going west to get to places on #1 off of #101 You can get off near Cambria, or Paso Robles to get to hurst castle. If you want to stay at the only State Park which is Big Sir you take a rd. forgot the name that's puts you about 5 miles to drive on #1. From Cambria south isn't to bad but would still be a challenge. This is a 2 lane road with very few trunouts. I will tell you it's beautiful. But not for a 5th wheel....
