Yellowstone edge rv park, emigrant Montana
Right on firehole river (not in Wyoming...so you can keep and eat the salmon you catch) camp fire get together every evening around community campfire. Lots cheaper than in Yellowstone and still close enough to enjoy the "figure eight"

Nobody’s mentioned Custer State Park. My number one choice. Coulter Bay trailer village is great and Big Moose in Cooke City is small and quiet and a great location for the northern part of the park. Anywhere in West is good. In GCNP stay in the park at trailer village.

For Yellowstone we stayed in island park id this summer buffalo run Rv Park it is about 30 minutes or so from Yellowstone not very far from Teton either but very peaceful liked the staff. We then stayed at the fish and fry camp for mt Rushmore again not the closest park and they were very packed. If I remember correctly August is the month for Sturgis bike rally you might want to check

You know it’s not the cold weather that kills the bison (Buffalo) it’s drifting outside the park and the park people thinning the herd.

If you see what you think is a cold and lonely bison calf, please don't put him in your car to warm up.

I use the app on my android phone called "park advisor" travel all over the USA and Canada and have found it invaluable. It's full of tons of sites, state and federal parks with interface to web pages and tons of pictures of the sites. Includes site amenities and stuff to do in their area.

There is a large bike rally (Sturgis Bike Rally) around Mt. Rushmore. In August. Most campgrounds get booked early as result. You might check your dates with whichever campground you choose. We stayed at Custers Gulch campground in Custer. It was nice and centrally located.

This can’t include any kind of hookups for that price, right?

We made the trip from Albany NY to Livingston Mt. in August/September of 2017. We stopped for a week at the KOA/Black Hills in Rapid City. It's centrally located for most of the attractions in the area such as Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Hot Springs and Mammoth Site, Deadwood, and Sturgis. On the way we stopped at the KOA in Sheridan Wy. both ways and the KOA at Devils Tower on the way back. For Yellowstone, we stopped at the KOA/Paradise Valley, which is right on the banks of the Yellowstone River and about 40 minutes from the North gate and Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone. I would suggest if you're going to stop at the Little Big Horn, do it on the way back after visiting the Crazy Horse Monument. Their museum has a book with photo's and stories from interviews with the participants in the battle. It will make the visit to the Big Horn battlefield more meaningful. There are a number of other campgrounds available in both Rapid City and the Yellowstone area. Can't comment on them, but we found these to be great campgrounds. The KOA at Devils Tower is right at the base of the tower and next to the entrance to the park. Awesome venue.

Does Custer state park have sites with hookups, or any with just power?

Mt Rushmore KOA at Palmer Glutch
He love staying at the Mt Rushmore KOA at Palmer Glutch, in the deluxe camp sites. Its About in the middle of everything you want to see. We stayed for a week and used it as base and traveled from there to see all of the sites.
