Be ready for HIGH gas and diesel prices

Just a heads up for those heading to CA this year and next, we just had a major gas and diesel tax increase as of Nov.1. The increase is to fix the roads in CA that are in bad shape. Gas went up .12 a gallon and diesel .22 a gallon. Plan on paying around $3.50 a gallon either way.

That's the result of CA being on the far left side of the country!

The speed limit in Utah 80mph on I-15 on that stretch of road. Many drivers do drive 85 though. Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming also have stretches of 80mph speed limit.

No problem on I-15 or I-80 in Utah for us. When towing our fifth wheel, I set my cruise control on 65 mph and seldom exceed it. That's why Interstate highways are multi-lane, divided roads--the 85 mph drivers can go around the 65 mph drivers without even slowing down.

If you take I40, check out Palo Dura State Park in west Texas just south of Amarillo.

I have made more than 25 cross-country trips over the span of 60+ years, mostly wasted because I was simply in a hurry to get from one coast to the other. Now that I am retired, my wife and I cherish the time we have to spend at the great National Parks in the West. I would recommend that you plan your trip on visiting as many of the great national Parks west of the Rockies as your time allows. All of the Interstates are safe and reliable pathways, and most get you fairly close to the NP's.

Keep in mind that travel distances between major parks in the West are significantly greater than in most of the East. Try to spend at least 2-3 days at each destination. Try to spend fewer than 8 hours on the road between destinations.

No California? We're a poverty state and need you gas tax money.
Just teasing, but smart move.
Plan a lot of time in Utah. Zion, Bryce, arches, and much more to see there. From TN I would pick the 40 route. Pretty scenic through NM (if you don't mind a casino every exit). In Montana your close to Yellowstone.
Have a fun trip.

Death Valley, Joshua Tree, King's Canyon, Sequoia, Lassen, Redwood, Yosemite, Pinnacles, and Channel Islands National Parks, plus multiple gorgeous State and Regional Parks like Red Rock Canyon, Lime Kiln, MacKerricher, Big Sur, Doran, Mono Lake, Morro Bay, Half Moon Bay ...
Yep, best to skip California and avoid the increased fuel tax...

I remember going through California on way back from Oregon took long way so my daughter could see Lake Tahoe. Stopped for gas around an entrance to Yosemite 5.00 a gallon

Mesa Verde NP in southern Colo. and Glacier NP in Montana. Also if you don't mind not having hookups, stay IN the parks.

We just went last summer. Our goal was to see the stuff out west so we headed up to Memphis from north Alabama and made a beeline on I-40.

First night we stopped at Lake Dardanelle State Park just west of Little Rock. They have sites that back up to the lake and a beach for everyone to relax after the first day's drive.

Day 2 we pushed it and drove all the way to Amarillo. Day 3 we stopped at KOA Albuquerque North/Bernalillio to slow down. From there it was up to 4 corners, monument valley, Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, and Vegas before heading north to spend a night at Ockey's Big Mountain Campground. We hit one place east of Yellowstone then headed home through the bighorns, Devil's Tower and Mt Rushmore.

While enjoyable we were driving, a lot on some days (the 2nd day was 501 miles).

Now that we have our own rv we plan on slowing down. For national parks, book early.
