Salt Flats

Might be taking the Class "C" to UTAH this Fall. Just wondering if anyone knows what the speed record is for a class "C" towing on the flats is?

I don't know what the max speed is on the flats, but unless you're there for a reason- mainly drag racing for time- you want to max out your class C and get the hell out of there... it's a miserable God-forsaken fly infested mess.

I have considered going to the Salt Flats in the future... Is it really all that bad there?

It's all that bad and even worse if the "water table" is high. Can be like traveling on wet beach sand and then you can get ready to fight corrosion for for the rest of your vehicle's life.

I have to admit that it has been quite a few years since I went out to Speed Week but I just remember extremely hot and dry. One thing for sure is that the salt does get into everything. Things could have changed though.

For several years the "flats" turned real slushy due to high water table. In 2015 Speed Week was cancelled because they could only find a couple miles of safe surface to race on.

Problem is that The Great Salt Lake has no natural outlet. It's a "terminal lake" meaning only evaporation causes rain and other water to leave the basin.

A nasty year for rain in the area or areas that drain into it cause the lake to rise. Also, when weather is crappy, evaporation diminishes. Conditions on the salt flats will depend on which weather cycle they are in.
