Summer Trip - Alberta to Oregon

Thinking about hooking to Roo to the back of the Jeep and heading from Alberta to Oregon. I know up in this neck of the woods if you don't have sites booked by now your out of luck - is it the same down South? If we wanted to drive and stop as needed would we have a hard time finding sites or would Wal-Mart camping be our only option?
We don't really have a route planned, but just want to get an idea if it is even a possibility.

Thanks very much for any insight,

Greetings to armstrong_haus,

Sounds like the makings of a wonderful trip! Seeing as how we're uncertain of your intended route please consider the following as a friendly suggestion:
1) Perform an internet search for zip codes for towns/areas considered for camping along your intended route, then next;
2) Perform an internet search for "campgrounds near [zip code]" using your list of selected zip codes.
3) You will be rewarded with a display of various campgrounds for each search.

For example: Federal Way, WA, is located about 50 kilometers south of Seattle. A local zip code is 98003. Searching for a campground near 98003 reveals several campgrounds close to Federal Way, not far from the I5 freeway. Nearest to FedWay is Dash Point State Park, then a few miles north of that is Salt Water State Park. Both are situated along Puget Sound with sandy beach areas and cool evening breezes. We've happily stayed at Dash Point several times. Also, there are 2 Walmart stores (as a backup) nearer to I5 than either campground.

Highway repairs and upgrades typically occur during the summer months in the Northwest. As such, one will undoubtedly encounter slowdowns here and there. Enjoy!

Last year we went last minute from Edmonton to Washington and Idaho. We used Good Sam Trip Planner to search routes and campgrounds.

It's probably worse in Oregon, for summer campsites.
I'm sure all coastal State Parks sites are already booked up for summer.
If you go inland, you'll have a better chance.
Or private parks.

Nearly all coastal campsites, on the West Coast, for the summer, were booked up months ago.

Awesome, thanks for all the replies and details. Thanks Northerlee for that idea - gives us a perfect starting point to start to plan out from there.
Will also look at the Good Sam planner also.
Thanks all,
