Teton Pass Hwy
We are in the Gros Ventre NP now and our next stop is West Yellowstone. The 2 shortest routes are thru the park or over the Teton Pass. I would assume thru the park to be pretty congested but am also concerned with the grade of the Teton Pass
I’m driving a F350 diesel and the exhaust brakes have worked great for me to this point traveling from Arizona to Wyoming but I have not seen 10% grades.
Any experience of those who have driven the Pass would be appreciated.
Also, alternate routes would be appreciated.

There really isn't much to see or do in West Yellowstone. I would take the route through the park and stop along the way to see the sights. Make a nice day out of it.

Leave by 8:00 am and the park shouldn't be too crowded.

Thx for the replies. We are staying at Grizzly for 5 nights so will have plenty of time to see YS. Just looking for best route to get to our camp at Grizzly.

The Pass is nothing to worry about, if the weather is nice like it is now. You will be slow going up, and low gear and brakes coming down. Everyone is used to it so don't worry. The issue is when you get down to Victor and Driggs, there's nothing to see except farm land all the way to Ashton, and then pull up Ashton hill to get up to Island Park and on into West Yellowstone. I'd go straight north thru Teton Park and into Moran and thru that way.

Thanks for all the replies. I decided to just take the south entrance into Yellowstone. The drive was nice and not congested at all. I’m glad I did that a couple of days ago because the south entrance road was closed today due to snow
Supposed to be in mid to low 20s tonight in West Yellowstone... cold for a Florida boy.

We did not find Yellowstone to be crowded and were there in The mont of August which is very popular due to the weather.

I made it up and down the pass in my Sequoia pulling my Rockwood 2702WS. No real issues. I followed the rule of thumb that you dont drive faster downgrade than you can go upgrade. I kept it in 1st and kept my speed at 20-25mph.
Anyone taking the pass just be advised if you feel like you cant do it then dont try it and go the long way.

Sheepish admittance.
I followed my GPS instead of going through the Park and went over Teton Pass on hwy 22. That costs me hundreds for new brakes........they were over 305 degrees about halfway down going north. And yes, my exhaust brake already had me in 1st gear for most of it. I know, many people say "Oh nothing to it" but I'm over 26K pounds total and I ain't going on any 10% grades ever again.

We generally go over the pass if we are in the car or pickup, and go up the canyon from Alpine if we have the RV or trailers. Its only 20 miles longer, and is a pretty drive too. The Pass does require you to go slow, but I think most people are experienced enough in their RV to realize their limitations.

I have not driven that specific pass but have driven several high elevations, both up and down with one having a 9% grade. My F-250 exhaust brake worked flawlessly every time. Just be alert and watch for others who may be flying by or having braking issues. It happens. But you should be fine with the F350.
