You can take a 40' motorhome on the AMHS ferries. There have been multiple motorhomes, long fifth wheels, and semi trucks on every AMHS ferry I have been on. In fact, our truck and trailer combo was exactly 40' after I took the spare tire off the back, which I did because the per foot cost changed at 40'.

We went into Canada from Washington via US 97/BC 97 when we took our trailer to Alaska. The Okanagan Valley in BC is gorgeous with its glacial lakes, orchard and vineyard-covered hillsides, dozens of wineries, and wonderful restaurants. We then went west to Kamloops and continued north on 97 to Prince George. We took the Yellowhead Highway and 37 to Stewart, Hyder, and Watson Lake. On the way home we took the Top of the World Highway, North Klondike Highway, and Alaska Highway to Alberta to revisit Jasper and Banff National Parks.

And, like the OP has planned, we were gone all summer. It was a memorable trip, attested to by the 3,000 photos we came home with!

I have been to Alaska more than 10 x but never wanted to drive. I have driven from the end of the ferry line at Haines to Anchorage which is about 650 miles through the Yukon. The roads have improved a lot but still are lumpy. Facilities are often 100 miles apart. Some people seem to really like all of that driving. My aunt used to live on the Kenai and has driven up and back around 12 times.

I like the Marine Highway System a lot. They can take your MH. You can get a room. It is quite different than a crusie ship because it is full of people from Alaska and more adventerous types;. I have taken the ferry twice and a cruise ship once. No more cruise ships. The rest of the time I have gone by airplane.

If you are determined to drive, have at it.

Take your Toad?

We have a 30' Class C. Worried about dragging the toad all that way over not so good roads. It's a Scion XB and pretty low to the ground. Should I leave it home for this trip? Thanks

If you plan on doing your trip in the next 4 months I can assure you it will get some abuse behind that Class C. Lots of road repairs from winter damage going on. You will encounter your share of mud and dust for the Class C and your toad. Nature of the Beast [Alaska Highway].
