Wolf Creek Pass

Ok, one more route question...Wolf Creek Pass in Colorado on US-160. Is this pass doable for a motorhome? I note there is one tunnel, but assume it's high enough for trucks to pass through. Going east the ascent is 7% for 9 miles and the descent from the summit is 6% for 8 miles. I've lived in Colorado so am familiar with mountain driving, but in a car, not a motorhome. Anyone with experience on this road, I would appreciate your input. Thanks!`

Just recently June of this year we went over Wolf Creek Pass eastbound. We have a 35’ MH on the Ford 24K chassis with the 7.3 V8. Based on your profile yours should be similar. We did this with our toad attached. We had no problems going up or down. I monitor engine & tranny temps with a scan gauge, neither climbed a significant amount.
I based my speed up & down on RPM vs speedometer. I kept RPM at about 3800 (this is the point where the 7.3 has about the max HP & torque) and locked into 2nd gear on the way up this resulted in good temps and adequate speed. On the way down I did the same only stab braking occasionally as needed. At the bottom brakes were not hot at all.

The tunnel is no problem although it is on a curve so take it easy. There is also a snow shelter you go through which again poses no issue. Take your time and don’t let your speed get ahead of you and you will be fine.

I did this last September, towing a 25BRDS...I don't remember any issues at all.

We did Wolf Creek Pass last year in early June. I had absolutely no issues with my RV and Toad. My advice after reading about it and driving it, is to take your time. Don't rush through it and enjoy the scenery. Everyone driving, cars, RVs, and Semis did the same thing and it was great. Read the Trucker signs too, as they are extremely informative.

Its a tough road, but not that different than other passes in CO. If you drive in that state you will be fine. Cold weather is a different story.

Just wanted to say again thanks for the info. We conquered "the Wolf" with no issues, following your good advice. Even purchased C.W. McCall's "Wolf Creek Pass" song to commemorate the trip! Safe travels.

I’ve done it many times…..oooops, that was on motorcycles. Please stay the heck out of our way if motorcycles come up behind you that road is a blast on sport bikes. Sport touring for those here who know bikes. I also do have sport bikes.

I’m new to travel trailers and am curious to learn. I know y’all are talking motorhomes, but I still like learning.
