Woman tries to pat 4,000 lb Bison in Yellowstone NP

Bison WINS by wanting to pat Woman from California.

A bison encounter that left a woman injured in Yellowstone National Park was captured on camera by a family camping nearby.

Family witnesses bison charge at woman in Yellowstone National Park.
“The lady got way too close, she just kept provoking the bison,” Jake Larsen said. “She was trying to reach her hand out and pet the thing.”

The Larsens watched a woman at a campsite near theirs as she repeatedly got close to one of the two roaming animals.

“I could hear the bison making noises and blowing steam out,” Jenna Larsen said. “It was just an accident waiting to happen at that point.”

Jenna was recording the moment the bison began to charge.

“She got thrown initially maybe 10, 15 feet in the air across and she was unconscious briefly,” Jodi Larsen said. “She got up, it hit her again.”

The woman was airlifted to an Idaho hospital, where she’s since been released.

The Larsens say that from the moment you arrive at the park, there are signs everywhere saying don’t approach the wildlife.

How do some people reach adult age, without getting killed by a bus? The stupid runs deep.

She's lucky to be alive. That bison could have pulverized her. Someone needed to tell her that this is not a petting zoo.

.... and what the heck was the man with her doing? It looks like he was capturing the action on his cell phone???? Sounds like grounds for divorce....

At some point during every day you suddenly realize nothing else productive is going to happen the rest of that day. For me, it usually occurs around 9 am.

Is that a child standing beside the picnic table close to the nice little (big) calf (bull) (click on picture)? Grandma may not have known that animals in the wild are... well.... wild.

The herd of that family was almost thinned out a little.

Think one and all... safety, first and always.

People forget that they are a guest in a wild county with wild animals! The park has warnings everywhere and yet it seems like something like this happens every year.

Maybe she thought it was one of her children leaving and just wanted to say Bi Son?

My daughter worked a summer at the Yellowstone Hotel. She had a monstrous bison that camped outside her dorm window. If you kept your distance all was fine. People approach the Bison every day there. It is truly a wonder that more people are not pushed around by the animals there.

Years ago the family was visiting Yellowstone. We had been hiking the trails and on the return trip we notice a large group had gathered at one end of a bridge. Upon arriving at bridge we discovered a large Bull had laid down right on the side of the path next to the bridge. Every time some one would start crossing the bridge, the Bull would start huffing very loudly. So I got off the path, cross down into the creek and walked across. The Bull focused all his attention on me and we began a stare down. I waved at the people to start crossing and to stay on the far side while I kept his attention. It worked quite well. He stayed focused on me and didn't bother with the people crossing the bridge. I was probably 30' or so from him.

They cut the video before she gets tossed. Watching someone get injured is not necessarily entertaining, it would probably add to the educational aspect of the story, let people see the results of foolish actions.

Watching the video, the woman wanted a reaction from the Bison.... she got a reaction from the Bison.

If that is their motorhome in the pic, it appears to be a Four Winds (Thor) so most likely not a member here in our forums.

This was intentional provocation by her, and I feel like they should be banned from Yellowstone as an example.

Don't they get a fine and evicted from the park for interfering with wildlife? They have already proven they can't be trusted near wildlife, why stop at just Yellostone, ban the couple from all national parks at least for a year.
