WOW, big pull over I-70
Wow, that is a steep hill east bound on I-70 to the Eisenhower Tunnel in Colorado. My Ford diesel truck was in 3rd gear and pulling hard. A beautiful ride, but don't be in a hurry.

I went up and over and then dooowwwn last year, fourth gear between 55-60, no idea where the couple in a Tundra pulling a SOB TT went to after I passed them....

Last time I pulled that grade was 1973 in a GMC Astro with a 318 Detroit and a 13spd. Had a full load on and got down into the low hole in one spot.

Ugh, I'm thinking of doing this Monday evening. We are driving from Colorado Springs to some random overnight stop between there and Moab, UT. It's 400-ish miles, so I want to get a headstart on Monday before finishing it out on Tuesday. The problem is, I won't be able to start until the evening after a day at a RV repair center.
Any concerns to making the drive in the dark?

It's not that bad at night. More than half the time we drive through there is at night in the winter (but we are only towing a utility double axle trailer with 2 utvs). You should be fine. The road is pretty good, it's just steep. You're gonna miss some beautiful scenery.. But you should be safe regardless.

I broke down in the Eisenhower Tunnel a few years ago. Bad gas and clogged filter. Nursed my MH into Breckenridge. Not a good feeling bringing stuck in that tunnel.

did that pass last week . I think east bound vail pass is even worse
i pulled it at about 40 with the 2500hd 6.0 gasser hauling the hfs 29 . great colors now but it'll be over soon . you want to try a real steep pass try east bound teton pass 10% grade and only 25 mph

I like to see where the curves are up ahead so I wouldn't drive it at night. If you take it slow would be OK, like 45 down Vail pass. By far not the steepest road I have gone down, but it is long and it is the steepest interstate road I have gone down. The curves aren't bad on that stretch, nothing you have to slow way down for, but there are some 45 MPH curves if I remember right.

I-70
I work for the fire department in Frisco and we cover I-70 from the Eisenhower Tunnel to just before the start of Vail pass. I see a lot of vehicles that are not designed to be pulling a trailer up or down the steep grade as well as vehicles that were not properly maintained for the trip. It is a beautiful location and there are a lot of perks living here. My 2014 GMC 2500 duramax does a great job pulling my Wildcat 5th wheel.

Traveled those mountain passess this summer. Those hills convinced me to change my TV. Pulling a 31 footer 5th wheel with a 2009 gasoline F250 V10 engine and getting 6MPG total average did it for me. Traded in TV for a new 2015 F250 diesel and also traded 5er for a new Polomino Columbus. Now, if it would only get out of the shop so we can use our new toys, it would really be great.

(I70 is a loooooong stretch of road between Indy and the Ike.)

Now you know why I go I-80 across Wyoming. Only problem there is there is always a headwind no matter which way you are going.

Ependydad... Recently did the trip and found Grand Junction to be a good stopping point. KOa there was nice and priced decently .... located at....2819 Hwy 50

Good CITY Market grocery store...Randy's diner...on frontage road within 1/2 mile plus lots of other stuff. Colorado National Monument is right there & worth seeing if you have the time. Since you are into dinosaurs Mr. Triceratops...consider going north from Moab to Dino National Monument near Vernal...best dino stuff I've ever seen. Do NOT go north from Grand Junction to see it...get to Moab first. Have fun.

I'll take a look at the stop you mentioned. I'm really thinking of just hitting a Walmart for the night. We'll see- there's still like 3 days until we roll on down the road. Plenty of time to decide!

We did Pikes Peak yesterday. No, certainly not towing! It was beautiful up there, but we were both a little light headed due to the thin air. Clear skies, 41 degrees, wind at 40+, and 14,100 elevation. It is a must do place.  . Not the best pic, but you get an idea of the endless view.

Tom & Renee. Now you need to go to Estes Park and drive over Trail Ridge Road -- NOT with your trailer and drive over to Grand Lake. Some nice campgrounds in Estes and nice day drive to Grand Lake and nice places for lunch. Before you go make sure a trail Ridge Road is open.

In the Northeast 10% grades are common. There are 14%+ grades around too. I laughed, but felt bad for the poor fella from Indiana who delivered our rig.
He took an early exit that has a 14% grade uphill. He said he was terrified it was going to flip over backwards. It's all in what you are used to. When we have been in the Rockies, the grades were longer, but didn't see anything that seemed too steep.
