The bison had to have been in a darn good humor that day not to have taken care of the problem.

/the big problem in Yellowstone is the animals are so used to humans that they behave differently then they would most anywhere else . so to get close up pictures is not really that threatening to the animals . though they can turn on you 99% of the time they do not . if they did then everyday they would have to flight for life half a dozen people out of there or more . when the elk and bison are so used to people that they walk in town , hang out very close to humans themselves it's hard not to take those pictures . i think they just need some good old fashion hunting seasons going on to put the fear back in to the animals . used to be people would feed the bears by hand and it was encouraged . have shows at the dump everyday . etc . times change and now they want to present Yellowstone as a wild place , not anymore and never will be again unless they stop humans from entering the park all together

From a foreigners standpoint calling it a "Park" does not help. Some people translate that to zoo? I had to explain the difference to friends that understood yellowstone but did not understand a translation of national park.

My MIL thought she needed a good pic of a bison with her cell phone. She kept creeping closer even when we told her to back off. He snorted and tapped a hoof and she realized how close she was, backing off. The best protection for her was my camera with a telephoto lens where she has to back off to get her picture and not an eyeball. Most people get caught up and forget.

But that's all it really is now a PARK . There are some wild areas but only because people do not get into those areas much . Outside the park as way more true wild country then inside the PARK

My impression is that the wild areas comprise a much larger area than the tourist areas. I doubt that wild animals in the remote areas allow humans to get anywhere near them. Except maybe bears in back-country camping areas looking for the food they smell in hikers' backpacks.

I completely agree. Parks are in cities, Yellowstone is a wild wilderness area and should be designated as such in its name.

Taken in Elk Country RV which is an aptly named old and slightly run down RV park near the Oregon coast. Staying there is all about seeing the elk that wonder thru nearly every day.

yep , wild areas where the people do not access . but through the entire yellowstone loop the animals are so used to humans it's like driving through a fenced wildlife park . the bison and elk are so used to people they behave differently . in the video that was posted if that was a truly wild bison the guy would have been flattened . but this bull was so used to people he really did not feel to threatened just slightly annoyed . i would call the yellowstone bison and elk semi-wild

Wilderness areas do not allow auto access, but foot and horse only . only part of Yellowstone is true wilderness . it would be good if they banned all auto from the park and only allowed bus tours that you got on outside the park . also all over night camping should be eliminated and everybody could stay at places outside of the park and do day tours controlled by the forest service . Then you would start seeing things being truly wild

It's time to stop intervening when people do stupid things like in the opening post. Let nature take it's course. The world is getting too crowded due to all the "bubble wrapping" of society. Do stupid things and win your stupid prize.

Any lawsuits arising from one's own stupidity should be prohibited.

I gotta plead guilty. Not at Yosemite, but in Smoky Mountain National Park. Baby bear kept trying to climb trees, momma would smack him out of them. Finally, baby bear made it up a tree, and Momma just sat down for a breather, i guess knowing the kid would have to come down eventually.

Momma bear was just cold-chilling and I got some great pictures. At some point a jeep with a dog barking came thru, and that really perked Momma-bear up. She then took a hard, steady look at me, and I figured it was time to go.

However, I was adamant about my safety. I looked at the guy standing next to me taking pictures. About 75, braces on both knees and a cane. I figured I could outrun him easy...

Here are some of my bear shots...taken in Woodland Park, Colorado.

Used to store ou old Coachman TT in friend's yard up there and was in it for the weekend (had a weekend gathering there) and as I was coming out the door I saw this guy running down the street.

Me being a former newspaper photographer, my first thought was to grab a camera and follow!

I did keep my distance and used a long lens, of course...

I'm guilty of stupidity at times myself. So I certainly cannot to judge anyone when it comes to taking wildlife pics.
Anyway, these were taken at a course in Myrtle Beach SC. The weather was cool so it was my hope was that I could outrun it if needed.
Probably not one of my best decisions but I'm still here so at least luck was on my side.

I was thinking more along the lines of just leaving him alone and letting the Bison handle things.

Might also discourage others who arent total idiots yet from trying the same thing.

In unarmed combat I'd bet on the Bison every time.
