Zion Mt Carmel Tunnel
Going to Zion National Park next summer. My trailer and truck are a few inches longer than 50 foot. How strict are they about length limitations? Also, do you think I should just go around. I will be coming form the east into Zion going to Zion Canyon Campground.
Thanks for any input. Larry

I'm assuming you visited their website and looked and the Prohibited Vehicles section...

Vehicles over 13 feet 1 inch tall, Semi-trucks, vehicles carrying hazardous materials, vehicles weighing more than 50,000 pounds, single vehicles over 40 feet long, combined vehicles over 50 feet long. All Bicycles. Pedestrians.

Yea I probably will. Either that or just go around. Just was checking to see if anybody had any experience with it.

Enter "Carmel Tunnel" in the search box and a few older threads will appear. Length restriction could be due to the switchbacks on the other side.
Safe and happy travels.
P.S. Nice pic with the kayak. Love it!

We were there at the end of April this year, we are about 4' too long but I didn't realize it at the time. The Ranger said, "you are a little over on length, today is my last day in the park so I'm going to let you go, just be careful on the turns". Not sure if he was kidding about it being his last day or not, but we went through and there were really no issues with tight turns. Since they have you drive down the middle of the tunnel, there was no issue there either. Not sure if we were lucky or if they always allow a little fudge factor on that 50' limit...

I don't know about the length but when I was there, there was a large tour bus ahead of me, much taller that my trailer, that at that time didn't have an air conditioner. He let the bus go through, but was reluctant to let me go through. My trailer was at most 10 feet high and 20 feet long. As he let me through he said, "stay in the middle". There was no chance my trailer was too tall for the tunnel. This was several years ago, and maybe just one guard was fussy, I don't know.

If you are not used to western mountain driving, I'd like to suggest that you go around, drop the TT at the CG and then go up the switchbacks, turn around and go back down. The trip is worth a few bazillion pictures. Then, for the next day(s), park at the base lodge and take the buses into the canyon and all the hiking trails. Take your time, it is a wonderful park.

That is probably what I will do. Don't want to get to ranger station and have to turn around anyway. I would like to be able to see scenery and stop where possible so really didn't make sense to deal with it all.

That sounds like a fantastic trip. Our neighbor visited Bryce Canyon and Zion last spring and said he found Kodachrome State Park that is near Bryce Canyon. He did not stay there, but said he plans to on his next visit to the area.
We visited Yellowstone 3 years ago and stayed at Henry’s Lake State Park near West Yellowstone and drove into the park every day.
