Did I ruin my bathroom sink?

Soooo. RV has been at dealership for 7 weeks for warranty repairs. (Don’t get me started). This is what I found when I got the RV back.

Apparently the hand soap pump bottle fell down in the over-the-sink cabinet and leaked down. I wiped away the soap but the sink remained stained. Tried several things that did not help. Put a little bleach on paper towels and left it for a bit. Now I have original problem and new black streaks. I have tried: vinegar, lemon juice, baking soda, soft scrub, etc. Click image for larger version

Any thoughts? It seems like the surface is pitted now. I just want to cry. Help!

I got some SS cleaner that does a pretty good job of cleaning. In a spray can. Don't remember the name and rv not here.

I think the sink is plastic so I’ve been concerned about how easy it will scratch.

Ok. A little bit of everyone’s suggestions and I’m making progress. Literally 1.5 hours of scrubbing and I still have very visible etching yet to remove - but a whole lot has been removed.

If it is plastic and the color goes all through you might try a buffing wheel with some compound. Just a thought.

You could try some 0000 steel wool and super lightweight oil. RemOil works well if you have it. https://www.amazon.com/Remington-Rem...ywords=rem+oil

I have used this to remove rusting from guns and it did not harm the bluing.

If the sink is truly plastic, I'm not sure.

Good news! If it's plastic it's probably not much to replace.

Thanks so much for the help. I guess the sink is not plastic so later today I’m moving on to use some of the SS/metal products suggested.

You might try some oxalic acid gel stain remover. This can be obtained at most any boat store. Try a small test spot first.

The sinks are made of a "dirty" stainless steel. Both of mine showed rust pits after sitting a day or two. Not much you can do, besides constant cleaning or replacement.

Did I ruin my bathroom sink?

I hope your stain comes out, mine didn't. I decided it looked bad enough I replaced my sink. It was an easy swap out. Class A Customs out of Elkhart, IN is where I found my replacement. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Qty | Item # | Description
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1 | SSOV-1217-22 | 12 x 17 Oval Stainless Steel Sink Single
| Bowl by Heng's
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Found a sticker on the bottom of the old sink with information to use to order the new one. Don't know if yours is the same size, but thought I'd pass this along if you decide to replace yours.

Kinda sad funny they give you replacement info - like they know their sink will need to be replaced.

It's a very inexpensive sink so replacing it might be easier than trying 20 different cleaning solutions.

It looks from the picture that your sink is stainless steel...
Something to think about - stainless steel is made primarily of iron and chromium. The chromium content when exposed to oxygen slowly builds a layer of chromium oxide on the surface of the iron preventing rust. So in cleaning stainless, you have to allow time for the chromium oxide layer to rebuild.

From my experience making beer and wine where I use stainless containers as fermenters:
1. NEVER use steel wool on stainless - the wool will embed microscopic bits of uncoated iron in the metals pores which WILL encourage rust.
2. NEVER use chlorine bleach or chlorine based cleaners on stainless - it will literally eat the stainless (dissolves the chromium dioxide layer).

So my thought - if you have gotten most of the stain out, give it a couple of weeks for a new chromium oxide layer to develop. The limited discoloration you are seeing MAY simply be metal without the chromium dioxide layer. If the stain is still there after a couple of weeks, you can do a new round of cleaning to try and totally eliminate the stain.

Sink is easy to replace. About $75 at CW for SS.

Magic Eraser and Stainless Steel Cleaner. SS Cleaner comes in a spray bottle and is available at appliance stores, Walmart, Home Depot, etc.

While we are talking stains; just a quick warning about chinese food; a relative spilled some sweet and sour sauce on my table, the red dye in it made it impossible to remove the pink stain from my table. I tried everything.
