Intersections in Texas can be a challenge. A lot of them are old 'farm to market' roads where the fastest transportation was a horse drawn buggy. The weave around property lines which may not be straight. They can also have a very tight turning radius. Left and right turns from the center lane are common. In small towns, they frequently have 'truck routes' because anything larger than a car can't make the turns.
You did the right thing. Look and then proceed with caution and a prayer thrown in for good measure.

There are a couple of multi-lane exits near where I live that restrict trucks from some of the left turn lanes to prevent lane encroachment.

Ok
To 5picker
I have watched maybe 50 YouTube videos on how to drive a truck or RV and Not once did I see anyone suggesting you use the inner of the turning lanes as you suggest. In fact I don’t think one even exist but for safety and taking the advice of many professionals I’ll stick with using the outer lane as they suggest.
Now playing with my right turn camera I definitely would have benefited from it in my situation. It allows me to see traffic but ( and it’s a big but) everything is smaller. You can see a long way but it’s very small on the screen so traffic will be on you in a heartbeat. From the camera lens you can see about 85 degrees which is amazing but again it’s pretty small. From only about 60 yards a person is only 3/8 inch on the screen and of course smaller the farther away - you can see movement 1/4 mile away but you have to strain you eyes studying the screen to tell what is actually making the movement.
Honestly I hope I’m never in this situation again and it’s easier to get out of my lane and into the right lane and turn right than risk an accident. Yes it’s going the wrong way but it’s the safe way.

I don't think so. If they'd wanted to yank a chain they'd just start a diesel vs gas thread.

Haha! Crossed my mind.
Seems to be overthinking a pretty simple scenario, and a little argumentative about some minor points. Seemed to be insulted that someone would ask the intersection / road names...!?

Actually, someone did that recently. It smelled like bait to me.

I don’t turn where I can’t see. Instead I would continue to the next intersection, turn right 3 times.

The OP said he was getting off the highway. If he continued to the next intersection it could be up the entrance ramp to the next exit. But yeah, even that might be preferable to come in from the other direction. But sometimes there is nothing directly across from the exit so you're kind of stuck with what it is.
