Georgetown 3 steps vs 2 steps entry

Regardless of what year or model of Georgetown, has anyone ever removed the third step on their rig to just have 2 steps for entry?

Reason I’m asking....a number of RVers over the years have mentioned times when because of curbs or such, their third step would hit or crunch on contact as the steps would open. It is a concern for 3 step models that 2 step owners don’t have. You can always carry a portable foldout step if needed.

Can the brackets for 3 steps be removed nicely, in case you wanted to go back to three?

Anyone?

A two step will also hit the curd.

Nothing’s perfect but how high are your curbs?

How often do you park next to a curb? I lift that side of my motorhome up so the step passes over the curb!

I think you would be sorry if you removed that 3rd step! My wife would shoot me if I did because she has had both knees replaced and that high step with only 2 steps would be hard to navigate!

I qualified the removal to two steps by carrying one of these when you need it.
Sometimes two will be enough, but when it’s not, use this, but curbs are less of a threat with a two step RV.

My wife has mobility issues, and this addresses yours and her concern.

I have the same problem. I now use the levelers on manual to lift that side. Works great.

So....if you make a stop in a town just for lunch, you have to deploy the right hand levellers so the third step clears the curb.
And you remember every time?

The only solution I have found is to avoid the curb parking or let the step hit the curb and stop. The step is designed to stop based on current draw. That how the motor stops when you use it normally. If I am outside, I will use my foot to stop it before it hits the curb.

I also have a small magnet that I can place on the door switch that disables the step when the door opens.

I did it. Got tired of the step hitting stuff. Cant remember how I did it, but I did....now just carry an adjustable alum step platform. No problems after 4 yrs.

Love to know what you did. I considered taking a grinder to cut off the bottom step and then moving the stop to step #2

Believe I just swapped the 3rd step into the 2nd step spot. Didn't cut anything, just step bolts and a step. Cant remember if I needed to swap other arms around or not. I think if you look at it you can probably figure it out...I did and I'm not that smart!! Like I said, it's been 4 or 5 years but it works good for us...don't miss that 3rd step at all.

Yes...that's correct. And, no... I don't remember all the time... just most of it. And when I do forget, it stops on its own as mentioned earlier. So far so good.

I also removed the lower step after a couple of encounters with curbs and also elevated ground adjacent to the curb. Another reason was because the motor/gear mechanism seems to be able to handle the two step load a lot easier than three steps. I haven't had any malfunctions since the change. It is very easy to remove the third step. The same hardware is used with only the long support arms being removed and replaced by the short arms from the third step. It has actually worked better since we almost always camp where they provide concrete pads and they seem to be elevated above ground level. Usually at the perfect level.

Read in the past that power steps "should" stop when there is resistance. Playing it safe by raising the starboard side is also good. Traveling with a broken, unretractable stair set is really bad!!

Good question. Mine got stuck on a speed bump at the required stopping place while checking in to a park in Creede. CO. Yes, a little (yet harsh) speed bump. At a stop sign no less. We won't get into whether or not the bump was needed or not.

We changed from 3 step to 2 step. Dealer did the work replacing brackets and motor.

If it hurt the steps when they bump into something mine would have been destroyed 5 years ago. I try to avoid it but no worries when it happens.

Not sure how to adjust without a Grinder and add new bolts. Click image for larger version

I’m looking at your 3 step photo...

If I’m right (does happen from time to time)

I would see about removing the short vertical bars on each side connecting the second step to the bottom step, and moving them to replace the long vertical bars connecting the top step to the second. I’m pretty sure I could then have the third step out of the picture....or did I miss something else?
