They are sharp but break up in pieces that are too small to form daggers.
I have 5 vessel type in my house with no problems but they are only 3 years old and 17mm thick.

They make new ones that are stamped steel. May be the way to go so you can get rid of the other ticking bomb!

Good that it was made of safety glass. Looks like when a car rear windshield breaks

Just a guess but if the drain fitting was just a bit too tight and it got a bit cold under the sink (here comes the physics) the disparity in coefficients of expansion and contraction could account for additional pressure being put on the glass as the drain fitting contracted. Just a guess.

Tempered glass is always under stress. Nothing to do with pyrex type glass. It isn’t safety glass either. Windshields are made of safety glass which is laminated with a plastic core. That is what keeps it from shattering into little pieces which would be disastrous if hit by a road hazard like a pebble. Safety/laminated glass can be cut and tempered glass will shatter if one attempts to cut it, since the outer tempered layer is under tension.
Not sure about the drain tension idea since they have rubber on the drain fittings. That is at least the household varieties. I have installed several and never heard about any breaking. Like anything if you get enough out there the odds increase. Especially with inferior quality products.

Any item made of tempered glass can explode under the right circumstances. Here is a good video explaining why and how:

Sounds like what I just said. I guess a video makes it better.

Wow I learned something today. I'm sure its a small percentage that this happens to but that happening late night could give someone a darn heartattack, of course thats JMO. Now is it just a FR issue or others, just curious. Glad FR is replacing them Free of charge but whose doing the installation and, as mentioned are they giving them matching sinks?

From what I have read and researched this is not limited to FR only, has also happened in residential use as well. Yes matching sinks, I will do the install.

This just happened to us. We were not in the RV. Came in to clean the RV before a trip and there was glass everywhere. Nothing hit it?
The good news e-trailer sells them for $55 a piece I purchased two becasue I was afraid they would not match. The replacement is so close that if you didn't know one had broken, they look the same.

If it is like other RV items they always seem to choose the cheapest. They are a very old if not the first style of indoor sink. Everything from petrified rock to wood has been used.
I wonder if there is chart somewhere that shows failures based on brands.
I prefer Kraus when I build, but I never did track houses.

Yes exactly what he said.
DISPARITY IN THE COEFFICIENTS OF EXPANSION AND CONTRACTION OF THE WHOOSY WHATS AND THEM THAR WHICHAMAJIGGS.
Perfect explanation. Thanks

This is just a tempered glass phenomenon. Any defect in the glass is an incident waiting to happen. It happens on glass doors to ovens. And it has been a huge problem for the last decade on sunroofs in vehicles. We had our sunroof explode (as opposed to implode, it stayed together) while driving down the highway. Sounded like a shotgun went off next to my head.

Happened to us with a glass computer desk
We had the same kind of spontaneous explosion happen in the middle of the night to our glass computer desk. It had glass shelves down one side and the bottom one exploded. It was really freaky. Shards of glass were everywhere.
