Yes. But only IF the inside switch actually controls the heater. In the OPS case, it didn't.

But the OPS control was one of those new-fangled computer-type control centers. If yours has actual switches, you should be OK.

Only way to know is leave the outside switch on, turn both inside switches OFF, and wait to see if the WH cools down (or never heats up).

Everything you wanted to know about what can go wrong with a Suburban water heater and how to fix it:

It's a 31-minute video and the tech walks you through everything that was wrong and shows how to fix it: Anode rod, backflushing, electric element testing and replacement, thermostatic switches, pop-off valve, etc.

The owner apparently did not do anything for maintenance so it's a pretty good video.

I've got the inside rocker switches not the fancy digital one. As far as leaving outside 1 on and inside off it may be to late as outside 1 was on when I winterized it! I'll find out in spring. May have to replace element!

If you are able to understand schematics, you'll see BOTH switches need to be on to energize the electric element in the schematics I posted.

If you turn on only the outside switch, the element won't work. If you turn on only the inside switch, the element won't work.

I have a system with two switches. I turned my outside switch on the day we brought it home and 3 years later I've never touched that switch. I control it entirely from the inside switch.

Here's my control panel...Click image for larger version
