How do you take the outlet covers off?

I want to install 6-outlet adapters on a few outlets. They have a screw to replace the one that normally holds the outlet faceplate on. But none of my outlets have a screw holding the faceplates on. WTH?

I figured I'd ask before I just start prying and break something...

Many of the outlets used in RV's are different than those at home and are one piece. They also don't use the normal screw terminals, but rather the wire is simply grasped by a notched contact. many times these produce poor contacts and can fail see photo.

Wondering how to get them out also, so thanks for asking op... the photo of what these look like is interesting, but doesn’t show an obvious way to separate.

The one pictured prys off. One of mine falls off on bad roads.

As Dan said, the faceplate prys off. In order to use the multitaps you'll have to replace the receptacles with residential style units. You'll also need to get some 'Old Work' shallow boxes.

I'm thinking a dab of silicone adhesive will be a lot less work...

I've plugged in those 6-outlet adapters at home and never used the screws in them. They aren't really necessary IMO.

I have one plugged in my trailer that has the outlets on the side, so it doesn't even have the hole for the screw in it. Never had a problem with it.

I have had problems in my house when the wires are not screwed to the outlets, over time they loosen.

I think the crazy RV outlets are used because there is no room for a proper electrical box. I added 2 outlets to my rig and fortunately there was room for a box.

One of the first things I did was to go to Home Depot and purchase Leviton NEMA-5 outlets and covers to replace the cheap Chinese outlets. Because of the RV walls you will have to get the small boxes:

I have added 2 outlets and used these....just make sure you don't get the child proof receptacles. There is more force required to push in the plug and if the outlet is installed in the thin paneling you can damage the paneling.

I think it’s speed. These outlets are likely faster to wire up as you lay the wire in and just press it together. No outlet box or anything needed.

Nobody mentioned this yet, I'm not sure if the 6-way will even plug into gfci outlet but if they do, don't plug one in there. Just saying.

I'm scratching my head trying to figure out why one would need "6" outlets on one receptacle? I've seen 4 (duplex), in residential wiring, but never 6.

None of the GT5 outlets are GFCI themselves or I haven't found it yet. I have a "GFCI Outlets" breaker but it does not have the test buttons so I'm guessing it's the latter.

I don't need six but every one of those adapters I've seen around here have six outlets. I'd like to have dark brown or black to match the existing outlets but they all seem to be white or cream colored.

I installed one behind the living area TV where it's out of sight. It has the TV, the Alexa, the DVD player and the weather station in it.

There's another two-outlet plug on the shelf in the bedroom which isn't enough for all of the chargers. Even though Forest River installed standalone dual USB plates all over, most are in a place where you'll never be able to use them. Like next to each bed "nightstand" but further outward so people sleeping in the bed can hit the USB cable and damage it or yank it out. Or in the overhead panel above the theater seats, but between the theater seats and the dinette.

So I figured I'd put in a few multi-outlet adapters with built-in USB ports. They won't be in an area where anything even remotely be considered high-current would be used (like the bathroom or kitchen).

Make sense?

Ray

The factory outlets are junk, just pop the cover and then unscrew the "wings" holding the outlet in, so just pitch 'em. You'd need a special tool to install the wires into the receptacle because the wires basically just push into copper notches on the receptacle. You'll need to pick up a couple of "old work" boxes to put the new receptacles in because there's no studs to hold a regular work box.

If the gfci trips sometime later would you remember that it is covered by the 6-way or would you be asking "wth"?
I haven't had a gfci outlet trip in 4 years at home or the TT. They still work when I push the test button.
