How to add oil without spilling?

How do you put oil into the filler neck without spilling it everywhere? Not to mention drain is above cross arm and will splatter everywhere as it is emptied! My first oil change was a pain - dirty. No comments (such as go to dealer, ... I prefer doing everything myself, that way I know it is done right) please, just suggestions.

But you will have to drain the old fashioned way before putting in the plug! Idid mine a couple weeks ago and drained the whole 7 qts on me or the ground. Took two bags of oil dry to clean it up and one pair of jea ns and shirt!! Another way is to run a clear hose down the dipstick and suck out as much as you can with a hand pump (very slow) or a battery operated one (much quicker) and the way im doing it from now on!!! Filling it back up with the battery pump took minutes-- no mess whatsoever!! I used a five qt jug and two qts of mobil 1-- pouring the two qts into the almost empty 5qt jug to finish off the job[emoji16]

This is what we use for the boat. The new oil drain hose is permanent - no moving or low hanging parts. Replace the drain plug with the new hose and leave the fitting at 90° to the pan. Unclip the hose form the fender well (or wherever) and put it into the oil drain container as you unscrew the cap.

I used to rate my oil changes in the number of rolls of paper towels I used.

For the oil filter there's two approaches.
1 - a shoebox inside a plastic bag - when all is said and done invert the bag and take it to the recycling center.
2 - Remove the filter while holding it inside a plastic bag - just let it drop into the bag when unscrewed.

Yup, I forgot to mention that [emoji4]. Got mine at advance parts, comes with a clear tube. Around $5. Also used that to get the last few drops of mobile 1.

I just use an old milk jug. I cut it and make a deflector. Works for me.

Thanks for the suggestion. Fumoto is not available anywhere locally, but is available at Amazon. If I filled in the data correctly - 2016 F53, I come up with the F106N (Specifications follow). If able, please confirm (anyone) this is the correct model (drain plug threads). I can call them tomorrow and still order in time, but if anyone on the forum knows, it will be appreciated.

  • Thread Pitch: 1.5

As I said in the original post "No comments please". This is the reason I hardly participate much more since joining. This forum appears to be a pastime for some vs being a healthy information source for those that need assistance.

However, regarding the comment, the lower arm causing the drain problem in the first place is a rather strong blocking item for any road debris. This item is a robust screw on item just like the original so be worried that road debris will knock off your original drain bolt too. There is a cover available that keeps the lever closed. I'm not concerned beyond normal - if going off road be concerned about everything, not just this.

Thanks Schvarak, I'm ordering today!

Then by all means, DON"T USE IT!! take an oil bath or pay someone else to do it for you!!

BTW, it DOES NOT hang down, it sticks straight aft or sideways depending on your engine. On my truck there are A LOT of other things hanging lower than this that the factory installed.

How to add oil without spilling

First to drain I use a piece of corrugated cardboard folded in a "V" to channel the oil over the axle to the drain pan. I use the Motorcraft oil in 5qt jugs at a bargain at Walmart. I bought a hand pump used to pump gear oil that screws right into the oil jug. The pump comes with hoses, adapters, and everything you need. I got the pump at Advance Auto.

For filling the oil, just attach a funnel to a piece of hose, run it out the top of the hood and attach it to a wiper blade with a bungee.
