How to replace water pump?

Changing out water pump. Do I need to drain water lines or tanks (fresh water or water heater) before disconnecting water lines from the pump?

1. You will need to empty your fresh water tank as the pump is hooked up to it and as soon as you disconnect the inlet side of the pump the tank will start draining from that line.

2. If you have city water hooked up I would turn it off just in case.

You wouldn't need to drain the hot water tank but I would turn off electric and gas to it just to be safe.

Now that is done I wanted to know why your water pump went bad?
You have a 2016 and the pump should last a long time.
Have you checked the fuse at the pump itself?

Good luck

It’s the valve inside the pump that’s bad. The fresh water tank fills when hooked to city water. According to FR that’s a common problem.

do you have a picture of your water pump? The check valve might be able to be replaced without changing the whole pump.

OK I used to have this happen on my Georgetown 378TS and I decided enough of this.
Seems if the campground water pressure is high and you don't use any flow reducer this can happen.

It also can happen when hooked up to campground water that has high pressure and you also turn on the water pump which may make the one way valve stay open in the pump because the campground water pressure is higher than the pumps.

My solution was to install this one way valve in line.
This was installed a few years ago and I have not had it fail yet.
Everything works as normal and all you need to do is cut the line and insert it without any fitting.

Link to Grainger $5.80 but I suspect you can find it cheaper.

FYI the pump end can be replaced as it is a separate assembly.
I got one free from the manufacturer when I thought mine was bad and wasn't.

FYI see attached file. Part #1 is the backflow preventer valve inside.

I know I can replace it on my boat water pump and TT water pump but didn't know what pump OP had so I wasn't sure.

Sometimes when you use the water pump some debris will block the check valve open or it just did not close correctly. This is the common problem FR is talking about.

With water in your fresh water tank turn off the city water, open a faucet to bleed off the pressure in the lines. Close the faucet, turn on the water pump, after it stops running open a faucet again letting water run out, close the faucet, let pump stop and repeat. You may have to do this procedure a couple of times.

In some rv's you use the same connection for filling the fresh water tank and city water there will be a valve you need to turn to divert the water to either the tank or plumbing, make sure that valve is turned fully to the direction you want the water to go.

You don't say, did you already purchase the pump and are now just going to install it? If so, by all means go ahead. You'll still will likely need to install another check valve (or new pump) at some point in the future.

I did this, no cutting. I purchased https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B000LWXB44 and https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B2AUJYO and installed them on the inlet side of the pump. It will keep the water from flowing through the pump into the tank. Just be sure to use some teflon tape in the threads to keep it from leaking. Be sure to point the arrow on the check valve in the direction the water will flow (if on the inlet side the arrow should point toward the pump).

The check valve inside this is much more robust than the one in the pump. Mine worked fine after that.
