If you had a propane tank mounting failure or cracking of any type at any time, no matter how long ago, please read this.
My contact at the NHTSA would like to speak with anyone that had a crack or outright failure in order to try and get a better idea of how widespread this issue is or is not. If you DID report your occurrence to the NHTSA they already have your contact information but feel free to send your contact info to me so they can double-check.
If you would not mind talking to them please send me your contact information by PM and I will relay it on. Or I could PM you their name and phone number so you do not need to share your identity with me. Either way works.
They will NOT share any information with FR without your explicit permission. They would like to be able to share your VIN with FR if possible but will NOT do so without your explicit permission.
It sounds like more people may have filed with the NHTSA than FR was aware of. That's understandable because if your motorhome was out of warranty people would not think to contact the manufacturer. But that means there may be a gap in Forest River's knowledge of whether there is a wider issue.
As an aside, I had another professional welder look at the cracking areas we had and that fellow is also convinced that the root cause (on our 2020 GT5 34H5) is that one corner of the tank mounting structure, the outside front corner, is not attached to anything else. That outer front end of the horizontal steel tubing in effect is acting like a diving board.
If so, that means that the corner will vibrate and move even if imperceptibly and transmit that bending movement to the rear outer corner, right where ours and others have cracked.
If so, that means it can happen again even with reinforcement. And the problem with reinforcing an area of weakness is that it simply moves the point of failure to the next weakest "link in the chain", wherever that may be.
Thanks for any help you can give. Your willingness to share may help keep another owner from having a life-ending catastrophe.
Thanks,
Ray
