That was the worst drive I've ever had in my Georgetown. The road from the entrance of Yellowstone at Gardner (through the arch) to Mammoth is tiny, winding, narrow and very busy. That was no fun at all!
On the other hand at Mammoth there were a bunch of parking spaces for big vehicles. So we explored that area on foot. Which was fun.
Then we drove through to West Yellowstone. Interestingly the road was pretty good from Mammoth through to West Yellowstone (via the shortest route on the west side of the park)
Near Gardner we stayed at Yellowstone's Edge RV Park. It's not fancy, but very clean and new and all the parking spots are a stones throw from the Yellowstone river. It was really neat at night to sleep with the windows open listening to the river all night.
Yellowstone's Edge RV Park
Near West Yellowstone we stayed at the West Yellowstone KOA. Nice indoor pool, which my daughter liked. Good food there too, pretty cool guy running the burger stand.
In West Yellowstone be sure to see The Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center. Plenty of parking for RV's and nice inside. It's basically a not-for-profit zoo type environment. Don't expect a road-side animal show type of place. It's a very processional environment dedicated to taking care of the animals first and showing them off second. Make sure to catch one of the Park Ranger led talks, you'll learn a lot about Yellowstone.
Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center
Also plan some time to walk around downtown west Yellowstone. There is an imax theater there. Plenty of places to eat and plenty of fun shops to wander through. And the most un-McDonalds looking McDonalds you've ever seen.

We stayed at the Rafter J Bar Ranch 30 years ago when our kids were little. We liked to stay at campgrounds that had swimming pools then so the kids had something to do. They just loved the place and its in a central location for attractions in the area. If its anything like it was then I highly recommend it. I would advise reservations also. We made reservations back then.

UPDATE, We are at Rafter J Bar and it is beautiful and nice campground. I recommend it strongly. We have done Mt. Rushmore and Custer State Park and will be visiting Deadwood, Sturgis and other points prior to leaving for Yellowstone. I appreciate all input from everyone and would not be her without that input. Thank you.

The cemetery in deadwood is pretty neat. Also in deadwood one of the casino's has a model railroad in the basement. The people at the visitor center can tell you which casino that is. I don't remember off the top of my head.

Oh yea and the South Dakota Air and Space Museum in Rapid City is pretty cool. Not a fancy place but they have a B1 bomber outside, which is pretty rare. Also a B52 in great shape outside, both of which you can walk right under and even touch. You're also likely to see B1's taking off and landing all day long at the air force base next door.

In the passport America book there is heartland rv park in Hermosa. I stayed there about 7 or 8 years ago and it was nice. Stay down on the flat lands with the motorhome run to the monument with your toad.

Hi Copsuno, headed to Yellowstone from Illinois on Friday. We are staying at fishing bridge and was told by my brother in law that last year the Cody entrance was a tough haul to fishing bridge, something about road being out. How was the road in from the east entrance?

Good decision!
Another week and we will start packing up and heading north to Grand Tetons, Colter Bay then into Yellowstone to west entrance and Grizzly Campground. We will be there July 1-6. Not sure what direction after that.
Any ideas?

Mike, Road construction, rough 1 lane, with flagman just after Ten Sleep as you enter big horn county. Be Prepared. Second about 5 miles before Worland same thing flagman 1 lane and rough, the one lane is dirt and rutted, still passable though. I am at Yellowstone Valley Rv between Cody and Park entrance, not a good choice due to strong wind and campground is really just massive gravel parking lot, still it on banks of Shoshone River. Safe Travels, The Big Horn Mountains are little steep and the pass is 9666ft. and several switch back on down side.

Mt. Rushmore don't want no pets. They say we can leave them in the car. Had it all planned out. Good thing I didn't make any reservations. Would of made a neat trip.

Planning a trip here in July 2013 and looking for the best spot. Here is where we are considering:
http://www.palmergulch.com
http://www.rafterj.com/
http://www.brokenarrowhorsecamp.com/
We have a Wildwood 26TBSS, two small boys, and a dog. We like the idea of rustic surroundings, space between sites, but also full services if possible, and some of entertainment for the kids (playground, pool, mini golf, etc).
If the campground doesn't have anything like that for kids, we need to be sure there is plenty of space around us for playing and exploring.
We're coming from Kansas and typically go to Colorado to escape the heat, so I'm hoping it won't be bad near Rushmore and the Black Hills.
Thanks for your replies.

Jhawkfan44, I stayed at Rafter J and I think it meets your needs, about three miles up to Rushmore and maybe 10 miles to Deadwood and 6 miles to Crazy Horse. Plenty of wide open space and a playground for kids and Pancake breakfast, nice store and gasoline. I think you and family would like it and saves a few dollars over the KOA at palmer gulch, pretty pricey since its close to Rushmore. You will love it. Are you going on to Yellowstone or is Rushmore the destination? Feel free to PM me.
