Mt Rushmore

I am heading out next week, for Mt. Rushmore, then after a few days, to Yellowstone. Has anyone had a good experience with campground(s) in this area. I hope to get reasonably close to Mt. Rushmore. Will be towing and use 50amp with my 2011 360. By the way anyone with the lippert steps needs to check the one center bolt on gear assembly and make sure its tight.
it is a 5/16th HEX. I stepped out of motor home last week and the steps started shifting and I almost fell. I crawled under the steps and while investigating, the bolt fell out and hit me in chest. My unit is 1yr old and this is first problem with steps, FYI. Thanks for input.

Can't answer your question but if you are still around Rushmore at night around 9pm there is a lighting ceremony that was kind of cool.

Palmer Gulch KOA Resort was awesome last June. It is on the backside of MT Rushmore abt 10 min from the heads and may 15 min from the Crazy Horse monument. We would and really want to go back as a week was not long enough in the area.

I have stayed at the Palmer Gultch KOA. It was very nice and in a good location to many of the area attractions. We had a great time there! Going to go back one of these days. There is alot to do and see in the area.

We've heard great things about Rafter Bar J Campground near Hill City, but haven't stayed there yet. We enjoyed Custer Gulch, located between the city of Custer and the entrance to Custer State Park.

Did the bolt on the steps fall out or did it sheer off?
Our's sheered off and I'm taking it to the dealer in the AM to get it fixed.
They have to dill our the bolt so a new one can be put in.

I was lucky, my bolt literally fell on my chest while trying to figure out why my steps were swinging in and out. I can see if bolt comes loose traveling it could shear. I was parked at home site and check rig out for upcoming trip. My shop is great, jumped right on it and fixed in couple days. We are ready to roll next Tues. Best of luck to you.

Also heard good things from rafter J bar by my in laws and others. Outside that, reviews online praise it as well. I am booked to stay there in 2 weeks, then to fish bridge in Yellowstone, then off to Teton village in Tetons.

We stayed at Custer State Park Sylvan Lake Campground. Has electric and we had site 6E that is very close to water so our hose could reach to fill the fresh water tank. We used the parks showers and restrooms. I think we stayed 3 nights on our return trip to Massachusetts after visiting Yellowstone. For Yellowstone we stayed at Henrys Fork in West Yellowstone outside the park.

We head up to Rushmore on 14th. Will not get there till 19th. We are staying at President Resort campground. Then a couple of days at Deadwood KOA. After that we stay a night in Cody and in Yellowstone. Then stay at Grizzly from June 25th to July 2nd. I'm working in Germany now and get home on 12th. Can not wait to head out.

Ditto on Acadianbobs recommendation for Sheridan Lake. There are no hookups if that's important to you. Rafter J is really nice if you need hookups. These are both around Hill city which is a good location.

A few years ago we stayed at Rafter J Bar Ranch near Hill City. Huge place with 5 different camping areas surrounded by hills, trees & meadows. Beautiful ! About 15 minutes from Mt Rushmore.
May be tough to get a site tho without a reservation.

I really want to thank everyone for the input. As always, if you want to know anything, ask and someone has the answer. I have a reservation at J bar and still undecided about Yellowstone, I will be entering from north via Mammoth, but do like Grizzly. Oh, part of the adventure. Custer State park is definitely on the "to do" list. Thanks again to all the great suggestions and tips. Dan
