Propane tank issue

When I was having my propane tank filled today the vapor/overfill valve would not allow any gas vapor to escape from the tank. I thought that when the valve was open gas vapor should be released from the tank.

I was able to get 15 gallons into the tank (gauge read 3/4 full) but I am concerned as to why no gas was released from the tank with the valve open.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? Short of having the tank emptied and replacing valve is there another fix?

Thanks,

I know when I have my 30# tanks filled, they open that valve and when it starts spitting they shut it and turn the pump off. You shouldn't see the vapor coming out, just liquid spitting when it's full.

If I open my valve it will close, no gas escapes.

Like I said that is coming out the bleeder screw, the new tanks have a built in shut off, this was changed like 10 or 15 years ago. Just read what you linked.

Here's a couple more. I've read the first one some time ago.

I know, but the guy that filled my tank in September just opened the vent and filled it, when it spit out liquid he shut it off. I do have the OPD tanks and they can be filled the same way.

I don't know why you'd need to vent a tank unless it was a brand new tank
and they were trying to get the air out.

Local tank fillers here never open the vent.
Just hook up the hose and run the pump until the internal float shuts off
the flow.
This on both 20 and 30# tanks.

I had an experience in Oregon this summer at an RV park. It wasn't the park managements fault, they just hired an idiot.
I had two 30# & one 20# tank filled and the fellow wouldn't vent them at all, said that was the way he was taught to do it. So when he got to the 20# tank I asked him why they had 3 screwdrivers laying there. When he tried filling the smaller tank it wouldn't take but about .2 of a gallon, he said it was full, I asked him to take one of those screwdrivers and vent it. He finally relented and did, got 3.5 more gallons in it.
I had all three topped off when I got home, some people! :rollback:
He's the first person I've seen try to fill them without venting. I was ready to vent on him!

The correct way to fill the propane tanks is to open the bleeder valve . You should never fill the tank and rely on the OPD valve . If no vapor comes out when you open the bleeder that means that the rubber seal at the end of the valve is stuck on the tank side . Try opening and closing the bleeder a few times if that does not work take it to a propane fill station and as long as the liquid is not up to the bleeder they can replace it .
