Refrigerator

What are your opinions on running the refrigerator continuously as opposed to turning it off when stored for long periods of time? We got conflicting opinions from salesmen when purchasing.

Ours has been running continually for several years. When we are home it is plugged in and we use it as a third fridge. Also have several friends who do the same thing.

Thanks for the helpful info. That's what the service gentleman told us to do.

In Florida many homes are unoccupied for 6 months at a time .

Most leave the compressor fridges on .

Don't think it would matter for a non compressor ( RV propane) fridge.

For clarification, what kind of fridge do you have (Residential/RV(propane/electric)). If residential, and you have access to power, I would leave it on all the time. the Propane units are designed so they can be turned off for extended periods of time.

I hate appearing to be ignorant on the subject because we just purchased our first RV, but the refrigerator automatically goes from Electric to propane when needed. Does that answer your question? I believe the salesman said residential fridge. This doesn't answer your question so you can help me I'll do some research when I get back to the RV.

Sounds like you have the typical RV fridge. Just leave it on auto and plugged in when in storage if you want to run the fridge. We only use propane when traveling or boondocking.

The new Residential fridges only run on 110 and are great if you are always plugged in. Not so much if you boondock. They are just like the fridge in your house.

I see people doing both with RV refrigerators, leave it on or off. Either methods seem creating no issues other than electric bill or propane usage when you have it on all the time.

Mine gets turned on to "Auto" a couple weeks before our first trip of the year in April and turned off sometime after the last trip in October. My camper stays plugged in at home all year and just switches to propane when travelling.

I love it that way because we leave things right in the fridge and freezer between trips. Haven't had a problem doing that way since switching from popups to travel trailers 2009.

On the plus side, we ran out butter at supper time in the house last week, but had some in the camper fridge.

That is a good point about energy usage. We have found the usage to be so small we never even notice it. It will run on one tank of propane for weeks, if not months. Electric use on metered sites is very small. So energy use is not really a concern in our experience.

My freezer ices up so when it's home it's a good time to empty it out, leave it off, and defrost.
