Renovation

We have a 2012 28 foot that was looking tired so we decided last year to reno it and keep it for a couple more years, as covid pricing is ridiculous right now. (New stereo, speakers, lighting, faucets, kitchen uppers, flooring, leather seat covers, sofa and mattress).

We were just about finished this summer - fast forward this August and we discovered side wall failure. I am now thinking we need to run from this beast. We have repaired the wall but I am not confident it will not happen again. If we trade it in, we not only lose money but are then obligated to buy from that dealership.

What are people's thoughts on selling privately? For those with sidewall failure, would you be perfectly honest with a potenial buyer and explain this can happen again? From what I have seen in other posts, this is not an isolated event and will likely recur.

Added a couple photos of our redo. It's so disappointing to have done so much work but no longer trust the vehicle. I really hate to pass this on to someone else!

If by "sidewall failure" you mean the sheared screws that causes the wall to drop, if it was repaired correctly using the correct strength screws or bolts and nuts I don't think you have anything to worry about in the future.

If that is not what you mean then please explain what happened.

Yes, that is exactly what I am referring to. The sheared screws, resulting in the wall separating. I am certain my husband has repaired it correctly, he's pretty anal about repairs. lol I am now concerned about this happening on the driver's side. It seems like a drastic thing to happen to a vehicle, but maybe that's just me overreacting.

If the driver wall has not separated he can just pop the trim off and check the tightness of the screws. If any are sheared off it should be very simple to replace them since the wall is still in position.

Smile Job Well Done!

First off, your remodel job looks awesome. Congratulations on a job well done, take a bow!!

I’m with NXR, especially since the job was done by someone who happens to be “anal”. Probably multiple times better than the original build. As for what to do about the other wall, I think you have two options. First you can rip into the wall like you did the first one and beef it up since you already know what to do. Or, second, you can run it and keep an eye on it. If it fails, you know how to fix it. If it doesn’t fail, you’ve saved yourselves time and money. The main drawback to option two is if it fails at an inconvenient time, but then again, how drastic was the first walls failure? If it is still runnable, then you can time when you do the repair. A lot will depend on how often you go camping, how far you go, how long you will keep it, etc.

As for telling a potential buyer about the repairs you’ve already done, I think your heart already knows the answer to that one. If selling to an individual, I try to go by the old fashion Golden Rule, or as a very wise man told me many years ago, “Let your conscious be your guide”. Of course, if you happen to have photos of the repair, I think between those and the quality of the other work you two have done on your rig, that will speak volumes to the new buyers.

By the way, these photos you posted prove that having a DH who’s “anal” can be a good thing! There’s a number of us on the forums you know.

It’ll be interesting to see what you two decide to do.

Thank you both, NXR and GrandpaPaul. My anxiety has reduced considerably. We will have the winter to decide what we will do, since it doesn't look like we will be travelling to the States any time soon!

If you are still in Reno I use Paramount RV for all my repairs and they do a good job at a fair price. Wouldn't hurt to just let them take a look.

They're not in Reno NV. Reno is short for RENOVATE. It pays to read the posts before adding your own.

Well, I would recommend that the OP start a thread about renovation with the word "Renovation". I thought it had to do with the city of Reno as well.

Title changed to "Renovation", to prevent confusion.
