just got back from the trip thank you all for the advice. stayed at the koa in palmer gulch at the base of Rushmore. it was a little pricey but they did have rental cars on property which was perfect. Drove the rv through the badlands and it was amazing did that on the way in also did wall drug the kids loved it. spent a day there and was surprised to find out that they have rv campsites there that are on a first come basis no reservations can be made for them. Had I done a little research in advance I would of tried to snag one for a night. the stars must be amazing. from there we went to the campground and picked up the rental and did the lighting ceremony of Rushmore. What a great experience that was for the whole family. We did deadwood the next day which was very different from when i was there as a kid. Basically a town of small casinos and the gunfights were not as good as i remembered. We stayed long to take the boot hill tour and see wild bill get shot and left. On the way back to the campground we did Bear Country. Which was awesome got there about 7 pm so we were one of the last ones in and had the park to ourselves. next day we went to custer park saw the bison (my nine year old informed me that they were not buffalos but bison) had lunch in the park which was the best meal we had it was a buffet but the check was 38 dollars for the whole family. we saw crazy horse from the highway (we can go back for that one). Then we did needles highway. the last day we goofed off in keystone acting like tourist in the small shops. loved the trip and am planing to go back next year for devils tower and do some hiking. left on Friday and because of the storms we took an alternate route back to Florida it took us through Nebraska on a road called the sandhills journey. it was very cool I suggested to anyone going to the area. once again thAnk you for the advice you guys gave getting a rental car really made it a fun trip that allowed us to see a lot more than if i was relying on the rv.
