Went to Alaska in 2016. 16500 miles in 3 1/2 months. From VA we went to Louisville, St Louis,Memphis, on rt 66 to Grand canyon, Las Vegas, Death Valley, Zion etc. Salt Lake City, Yellowstone and into BC, Yukon. We did Homer, Anchorage, Denali, Fairbanks, Dawson City and then to Alberta and Glacier NP. Came back via Mt Rushmore, Mall of the Americas, Green Bay, Chicago, Cooperstown PA and MD.
No flats, no mechanical problems and no cracked windshield on the towed. If you have a rock guard, take it off, it acts as a slingshot.
We booked all campgrounds in the US on the way up, in January, but in Canada and on the way back, we called in the am for a campground that night. We did our initial border crossing at Laurier WA, nice people and NO traffic.
Plan on spending 2 or 3 nights at the more interesting places, driving Alaskan roads is slow and tedious, especially the work zones which sometimes last 20 miles.
I carried a shotgun in the coach (handguns and Rifles are not allowed in Canada) and declared it at the initial border crossing. Every time we crossed the border, and you will several times, I produced the paperwork and my passport and only once was asked to see the gun.
Enjoy the trip, Alaska is worth every $$$ you spend.
