Window film

Has anybody used the heat blocking window film for added insulation?
We do not have dual pane Windows and I was wondering if the window film, like what 3M makes, would help in keeping my coach better insulated.

I tinted all my windows last spring. The big test was a week in Pheonix AZ in July, Outside Air Temperature was 115.

We have one rooftop AC unit (13.5 kbtu) The inside of our Mirada stayed a nice 75 degrees.

I wrote a short article on my blog site:

blocking any sun can do nothing but help the AC, but I wouldn't go as far as calling it insulation

Maybe the mirrored stuff would work better...I use the bubble wrap stuff you get at Lowe's or HD
Shades hold it place

the stock window shades do a pretty good job of blocking sun and heat infiltration through the windows...
If you want a view during the day, then tint the windows dark and/or reflective... it has worked in my car

On our big trip last year we put film on the windows from Home Depot and the refectix in all the closets and outside wall cabinets. In June and July across TN, AR, OK, TX, NV And UT we werereally comfortable with just the engine ac and 1 ac at night. It really made a difference.

Be apprised that if your outfit is a motorhome, some states (Michigan for one) frown on tinted or filmed windows in the front (windshield and drivers and passengers side windows). Tinted or filmed windows can get you a citation if the LE wants to issue one.

VA is one of those states. I was camping with a friend who got a citation in VA for tinted windows in divers and passengers side windows. He had a MD registration. It was not a secondary violation, that was why he was pulled over.

IN PA it is 70% minimum for tint and no windshields. Only the top few inches of the windshield can be tinted.

Had a friend with an eye issue that needed a heavy tint on his windows and he had to carry a doctors letter with him to show the LE if he got stopped.

I don't believe every state has that law but some do.

Factory applied tint don't apply, just aftermarket film.

I believe it has to do with an officer being able to clearly see inside a vehicle when stopped.

Like I said, Michigan for sure and I believe there is a guideline as to how much light reduction is permissible, but again, not sure. My windows have factory tint only.

We have the same law... But it is for COLORLESS tint. They have tinting that is clear but blocks the same light and rays and all. 3m is one maker of it. It is pricey but that is the only "tint" allowed for medical reasons here. Needs to be noted on an official PennDOT form, just a doctors note does not work.

Ks has laws of 35% on driver and passenger side windows, 20% on rear windows and nothing but then first 4" of winshields.

I broke that in my wifes car but if ever pulled over at night we immediately flick on my dome lights so they can see in. As long as we are nice so are they.

There are some clear tints that block uv and decrease heat a bit...marginally. I would make sure anything with any color or metal in it reaches 95% uv block or better. Uv will damage the rv as well so nice to have that blocked.
