fun rookie times at the dumping station

Hi - we have a 2016 cherokee 274RK - our last trip out ( which was our third only ) i did the usual Sunday afternoon dumping station before heading home
Both tanks were totally emptied out, the monitor panels read empty and off we went
Two days ago in the driveway I pulled the gray tank valve as I was bored and water rushed through to the cap I then closed it .....i went in and turned on the sink tap and yet more water come out ....I then turned on the pump and even more came out. I see underneath the belly the fresh water tank valve is open
To top it all off curiosity got me and I pulled the blk water on / off valve as quick as my hand would move ..uggg..Camping starts tomorrow for the weekend again .......This Sunday afternoon dumping station should be a real treat for a few seconds when the cap comes off ......

I guess the gray and black tanks are really never empty ?

Depending how your tanks are hooked up and if the trailer is leaning towards the dump valve or away can make it so not all the suff comes out. If the spot I need to stop at is not sloped towards the hole I will put a board under the far side wheel so the trailer will empty better.

I'd swing in the dump station as close as possible and get some rubber gloves to take cap off. Wash the concrete down as others don't want to walk in that either. Or just pull into the grass some where but I'd definitely get some gloves for that one.

Take a large zip lock - if you can find a 2 gallon one, great as it's likely not more than that. You can also use a heavy duty garbage bag.

Put the opening up and around the sewer cap. Then, grasping the outside of the bag, twist the cap off. All the "stuff" will dump into the bag which you can then empty down the dumpstation drain.

Keeps your hands neat and clean.

Many campers attempt to keep their tanks spotless , I say , why ! Empty as best ya can and thats enuf . Add a gallon or two of water and off I go . Of course we use our trailer three or four times a month !

Yeppers. Repeat offender, actually! Not always my fault, but I know how to handle it.

Though, I think I need to give credit to youroo for the idea.

Do you have a clear elbow on it now?

Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me!

I've had one on since the first summer. They haven't come off except for factory returns since the first couple of trips. That's how I've always known the mess of a problem was back there.

True that. I've never claimed to not be a "fool", though.

It's not always my fault. The factory left me with a surprise after one of the returns. Another case was a random case where the valve didn't fully close for whatever reason.

The worst, though, was my dumb ass- I spaced out and went and pulled the rear handle and forgot that I had not hooked that hose up. I was doing the front at the same time and had that one hooked up. To make matters worse, the cap had a broken bayonet fitting and it lets a bunch of "stuff" crash down to the ground. Took a while to clean that crap up.

No surprises, but sure doesn't stop the OP for a "blond moment" where he pulled the handle.

I dealt with the problem of getting dumped on when initially removing the cap by installing a gate valve like this:

That's one of the other reasons I hard plumbed the rear tank to the front and added a valve.
