Didn't drive down Hwy 2 / 8, but did get to Skagway, as it's a stop for many cruise lines.

If you go to Skagway, make sure to take a trip on the White Pass & Yukon Route RR. There's one route that takes the Chilkoot trail and crosses the US / CA border (you have to bring your passport, and you're reminded before the train leaves Skagway). It's a round trip, so you end up back in Skagway at the end of the trip.

Scenery is to die for, and there are areas where you wonder "how did they ever get that built / keep it open?" And they use steam locomotives & similar period passenger cars, as well.

I went last year and have a ton of maps, guides, brochures etc, including the 2017 Milepost. I gathered it all on the route through BC, Yukon and Alaska. It was very helpful and I discovered things to see I that never would of known about otherwise.

I can mail it all to you if you'd be kind enough to reimburse my postage. It shouldn't be much since it will be Media Mail.

If you (or anyone else) wants it, private message me with your mailing address.

As they say, been there, done that. We also took a cruise ship up the Alaska coast line. LOVED it!
This time we're going up the the MH thru Canada. I was going to stay on the ALCan to Ankorage, and then saw this cutoff to Skagway and Haines.
Was wondering how steep and curvy the roads were for a 38' with toad???

Thanks for the suggestions. We plan to do them again!

we took the Ferry from Haines to Skagway, with the motorhome in the 'belly' of the ship, while we rode in luxury at the top(enclosed for weather protection, since it was rainy, as usual)...stayed overnight at the first campground/rv park right on the harbor, ate at a wonderful harborside seafood restaurant while the cruise ships came in, and drove out of Skagway N on Hwy98/Hwy2... WHAT A DRIVE! You've got to take this trip in your RV... you go from Skagway UP the mountains(what mountains!) to the US/CANADA border, which sits on the top of the mountain, but the custom's house/gate is all the way down the other side, so you can stop at the 'Welcome to Alaska' sign, and straddle the BORDER of two countries at the same time(it's in the clouds!) at the White Pass Summit... and the other side going into far NW British Columbia is absolutely AMAZINGGGGGG!!!! Try it.

Our son lives up there north of FSJ, not that I know every pothole but there are plenty. And yes, credit cards are accepted pretty much everywhere, mostly mastercard. A lot of retailers dumped Visa due to the high fees. The only time we use cash is for a shopping card, we don't even use debit anymore. Make sure to fill up in FSJ, fuel gets even more expensive further north and know how far the next gas station is away. Stop at the visitor centers on the way, ask for local attractions or unique restaurants. If you can find the time drive FSJ down the Peace River valley down to Hudson's Hope, better not in a big motorhome or towing a trailer.
