Private campground.

I'm looking for a decent private campground anywhere within a 2 hour drive from the Petawawa area. Towards North Bay or towards Kingston. Even towards the ottawa region. My family has been camping at Provincial parks for many years and we love the wooded atmosphere. I'm hesitant to venture to a privately owned for fear that I'll be stuck in a field with a few saplings for shade. Can anyone recommend one from experience that has a nice "camping" feel about it.

Unfortunately I've only used Provincial Parks along highway 7 between here and Petawawa so I'd be interested in hearing some good non-PP suggestions as well.

Happycamper77 or mTn biker65 We have stayed at the Algonquin trails camp grounds which is just outside the west gate to Algonquin Park a few times now, its a private CG not really big but we feel very nice. They have everything but cable and is very close to the PP. Look up their web site, see what you think.

I don't know any around Petawawa, sorry, but down here in the south I use Good Sam's website and RVParkReviews to look for new campgrounds. Then I cross-reference them with Yelp, Google maps Satellite views and a general good old Google search. (Yeah, I go overboard sometimes).

You just can't go wrong with a PP. Our go to park right now is Bonnechere PP. They have a great program that runs in August telling local ghost stories and legends.

Hmmm. The West gate is a bit of a drive down hywy 60. I'll defiantly look it up if we want to stay out that way. Don't really care about the cable. We are mostly in it for the camping. You know, beach time, camp fire, walking the trails etc. I find a lot of private parks are more like resorts. Arcades, pools, even saw one with bungee jumping.

Happycamper, we have also stayed at Rideau acres which is near Kingston ( 15-20 mins to downtown, same to Old Fort Henry) not a bad place, good bass fishing if you are into it, don't know if I would want to stay more than a week there thought.

Private campground.

We love Bon Echo PP. In Algonquin PP, try either Lake of Two Rivers or Mew Lake. At all 3, the electric sites get booked very quickly. Non-electric sites are much easier to get.

Edit: Sorry just realized you're asking about private campgrounds. Can't really help you with that. The only private campgrounds we've stayed at in Ontario are KOAs and very few are in wooded areas. Many have mature trees but not many have sites in the woods. The one just outside Gananoque has a wooded area IIRC.

On another note, if you're willing to travel down here, I love Camper's Cove in Wheatley. One of the few private campgrounds I've been to that actually has trees and feels like real camping.

Lol. We love Bon echo also. Every fall my whole family rents 2 or 3 sites there for a weekend.

Wheatley. Is that down past London? If I'll keep it in mind if we want another trip down that way.
Furthest we've been in that direction is Bronte Creek PP in (or near) Oakville. Which is btw an amazing park. Wonderful for kids. They have a huge old barn converted into a play area with a ball pit and bridges and slides. Made me wish I was 6 again. Lol.

Sorry, same here. we've done many of the provincial parks, but, we don't do private parks. I have the same concerns with private parks that you've mentioned.

good luck.

Yeah, way down past London. It's close to Leamington. I agree on Bronte Creek, the kids loved it there and we may end up going back. It's not as treed as some other PP's I've been to as a kid, but that actually works out as a good thing for getting the trailer in and out.

No I haven't tried it. I do know of it though. Have you been there? What's it like?

as a campground it not too bad ... kinda provincial parks like .. but with the main stayers being permanent ..
i have fished there in the last year .... booking the cottages .. stay away from these, as they are fairly loud.
the owner we have found was a bit of a fool.

I have looked at the site. Here in trying to get some first hand opinions. I know of many private sites around this area. But a lot don't have websites and the ones that do don't show much.

Someone else on here recommend Rideau. I'm from Kingston originally. I think I might try a stay there.
