Smile Thousand islands recommendations

We are planning a week long trip in June to the Thousand Island region (within Canada or USA or both) Any suggestions or recommendations as to campgrounds (32 ft five) as well as things to do and see or not do in the region. We could stay on either side of the border. What might you suggest?

On the Ontario side we're big fans of The Parks of the St Lawrence and the Long Sault Parkway near Morrisburg / Ingleside; on the NY side we like Coles Creek, Kring Point and Cedar Point.

I would look at the campgrounds in Ivy Lea. there is one right on the river by the bridge (Ive Lea Campground) and a KOA up the road.

We usually stay at Association Island KOA. The sites in the H section are excellent, right on Lake Ontario.

Cedar Point is nice, between Cape Vincent and Clayton on the US side. Some sites are directly on the river, but they fill up fast - get reservations ASAP. Association Island is also nice, but it's about 35 miles from the 1,000 Island region. Wellesley Island state park is on Wellesley Island between the US and Canadian bridges (between Clayton and Alexandria Bay) . Also a nice park, close to shopping, dining, sight seeing etc. Krings Point is a nice park between Alex Bay and Ogdensburg, but not really close to any tourist type stuff. Just my $0.02.

Pretty sure Kring - the nice waterfront sites at least - are all 15A.

Ivy Lea KOA which is right on the Parkway and very close to the bridge if you were going to cross to the USA. If you are into boat tours there is the 1000 island boat tour which goes up the river stops at Bolt Castle etc

A couple people have recommended the Ivy Lea Campground right beside the bridge to the USA. Beware that if you camp there you will hear traffic, including large tractor trailers, crossing the bridge all night. If you're a light sleeper it will be a problem. Better to go west a couple of miles towards Gananoque and stay at the Ivy Lea KOA.

Things to do on the Canadian side:

- Boat tours. For a day cruise, I recommend taking a boat tour out of Rockport. Their smaller boats can get you closer to the islands. Gananoque has larger boats and a 3-course dinner cruise if you prefer that.

- Drive the 1000 Islands Parkway. A nice, scenic drive stretching 40 km (25 miles) from just west of Brockville in the east, to Gananoque in the west.

- Kingston. It used to be the capital of Upper Canada. A beautiful, historic city - especially along the waterfront and downtown.

- Old Fort Henry is a must see. It's a fort built for the War of 1812 between the United States and the British Colonies and their native allies (Canada became it's own country in 1867). There are lots of ceremonies happening daily. Try to see the sunset ceremony.

- Upper Canada Village. A reproduction of village life back in the 1860's.

Note that the Long Sault Parkway and Upper Canada Village are not really in the 1000 Islands are but a bit farther east, both east of Morrisburg, ON.

Enjoy your stay in the area, French.

Thanks for the compliment kenandterry. My "wisdom" comes from living in the area from 1977 to 1986. My DW's brothers still live in Gananoque and we're down there at least twice a year.
