Depending on what the "powers that be" see the numbers doing, will determine if the borders re-open in June, or if the deadline gets extended.

I think even if they reopen the borders I wonder how long before they lift the 2 week quarantine when returning/coming into Canada.

Quarantine could be an issue for some time to come especially into and out of areas of higher population and Covid numbers.

Out West it may not present as great a problem but the Govt isn't likely to adopt a regional approach to quarantine.

Another issue may be the availability and cost of out of country medical coverage. It could be a very Interesting time for Canadian Snowbirds in the Fall.

Can't blame Canada for not wanting to open the border up. They probably feel like they're living above a Meth lab.

Extended until August 21st. Canadians are overwhelmingly in support of keeping the border closed. I don't blame them one bit! I don't know that the border will open up at all this year the way things are going.

I agree.
And on the southern border, for the first time in my lifetime, Mexico doesn't want us crossing their border. Now that's a switch!
Every group event we had planned on participating in for the remainder of this year, has been canceled. And they were in multiple states.
Amazing how the world can change in a matter of months.

Yup....extended to August 21 like GravelRide said.

Rumours say it may be next year the way things are going.

I wonder when Snowbirds will start to retaliate?

What about northbound travel. Still a lot of "middle of the night" crossings out in the remote areas?

Years ago I was driving from Silver City to Demming in the early morning and along the road they might as well have painted Crosswalks with the number of groups walking across the road. Seemed like that area was quite a ways from the border but the guy I was driving with told me that it was a regular thing there.

Depends on where you are on the border.
Our son is Border Patrol agent in the Nogales sector. He says illegal northbound foot traffic has all but stopped since Covid19, along the entire border. Now they can concentrate on the drugs coming through the ports.

Not surprising with the general shutdown around the country. Not many jobs even for existing residents.

Certainly one aspect of the lack of illegal border crossings. I wish it was just one or two things, then it would be easier to fix

We tried to get clear information via the Canadian tourism site. (Canada.travel) The first redirect is a page that has a bunch of "virtual tours". Looking specifically for tourism restrictions due to COVID links to a bunch of general guidelines, some of which seem to say the border opens on July 21st, others which seem to say discretionary travel is prohibited entirely, some mention a mandatory 14 day quarantine. Then there are news articles claiming most Canadians want the border to stay totally closed until next year.

Oh well - I guess our tour of the maritime provinces is on hold until next year.

Canadian PM Continues Border Closure For Non-Essential Travel

December 1, 2020

CANADA WILL NOT LIFT the ban on non-essential travel with the U.S. until the coronavirus pandemic has significantly been brought under control.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday that the ban on travel between the two countries will likely last well into next year. The restrictions were first put in place in March as COVID-19 began to spread and it has been extended every month since.

"Until the virus is significantly more under control everywhere around the world, we're not going to be releasing the restrictions at the border," Trudeau told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. "We are incredibly lucky that trade in essential goods – in agricultural products, in pharmaceuticals – is flowing back and forth as it always has. It's just not people traveling, which I think is the important thing."

Got a call from a friend of 65 years.

He was marrying his Canadian girlfriend on Saturday. Because he could not go there. She could fly here but had to do the 14 day lockup thing there.

As a retired Canadian she has to live there 6 months a year for medical.

A mess. But now he can quarantine there. They are together at last. Separated since March.

Sadly it's at least another month. I wonder what kind of an outcry there would have been if the government said it was closed for a year and review after that? Instead it goes month by month...
