What food items can be taken into Canada

I have looked far and wide but I am at a loss as to what I can take into Canada. I don't smoke and I plan on carrying two bottles of wine, local sweet wine from NC. No guns. I was mostly wanting to know about what food I can take. Would it pay to load up with food before I cross the border. I have residential refrigerator. I know food cost more in Alaska and Canada. I am retired military and plan to get on base in Alaska. Any help would be much appreciated

It will take you the Canadian Food Inspection Agency site...keep in mind that groceries are generally more expensive in Canada but that is not necessarily always accurate....more importantly your US dollars are worth much more in Canada right now so the exchange on your money will probably more than make up for any increased cost. Liquor on the other hand is far cheaper on your side of the border!

Just call Canada customs tell where your going and ask what not to bring, coming into the US they took some of my fruits & vegetables and you can each have one bottle of liquor, but make sure you have NO GUNS or you will be going home without them. It's a stupid old British tradition. Most of us have rifles but rare to own a hand gun unless you belong to a gun club.

Spock, you can take ANY FOOD you want into Canada! Anything.

You just have to eat it first!

Within the last few months I was in several Florida large grocery store chains.
It was very clear to me that beyond alcohol and beer it is cheaper to buy your groceries in Canada.( certainly once you factor in the 30 percent exchange on US dollars to Canadian dollars. When we crossed we were told no meat no vegetables no fruit , so really, no fun at all.
My suggestion declare nothing and/ or bring nothing and buy local

Regardless of what some are saying here, it is relatively easy to take rifles, or shotguns, into and through Canada. Pistols are harder. For long guns you print a form off of the RCMP website, fill it out, show the guns at the border and pay a $25C fee and you are in, if you followed the directions correctly. It takes about 15 extra minutes when crossing the border the first time, from then on, you just show the paperwork, like coming back to Canada from Alaska. Been there and done it.

Last I knew as far as wine you could take 750ml or one bottle in. If you have a criminal record they won`t let you in either . I use to enjoy going to Canada but the customs got to be, that its not worth waiting in line for several hours then to be asked a million questions.

I would not go into Canada for anything the last few times I was treated like I was some kind of felon and asked a million questions and I the very last time I said to the agent you know I think I will just go back then he got nice and I said bye I am going back and have not gone back since 1999. When friends come to visit we are just a few hours away from the falls I take then up and say see ya when you cross back and I go to the casino

I would recommend going to the source: The Canada Food Inspection Agency determines restrictions on food items. They have a simple list on their site at What Can I Bring Into Canada in Terms Of Food, Plant, Animal and Related Products? - Food - Canadian Food Inspection Agency. As long as we're on the subject, Canada has some significant restrictions on handguns, etc. We went through their border last year and were quizzed extensively on what kind of food we had on board. From others we learned that if you are caught in one of their frequent random searches, they'll go through your camper front to back. Enjoy. It's a fabulous place to visit.

Latest reading (last week) 20 kg of pet foods (44 pounds, total including treats) as confirmed by a phone call. original packaging showing made in USA. 20 kg per person meats including jerky, sausage, deli meats, hamburger with labels of origin--keep in original packaging I understand. MAX 10 kg chicken 2 doz eggs, and 20 kg of dairy products NTE $20 (not sure if US or Canadian). Veggies up to 20 kg frozen or chilled veggies per person, up to 15 pkgs or 15 cans of fruits and veggies per person, and fresh produce limits (no more than 1 8 pound bag of potatoes)
spices, coffee, tea no limits that I could find

I planned to pre-cook and freeze some meals, for quick prep but limiting that to pasta or other items that will not cause a ruckus, if I can figure it out. I am guessing pasta sause probably falls under canned goods if not including meats?

So will go with about a weeks worth of stuff and shop as we need to, except the dog food will go with the max since she is a senior citizen and a little particular about her food.

Do yourself and your passengers a favor and check out the rules on the websites. Call them to be sure. Then, when you get to the border, declare everything and be completely truthful. You should have a trouble-free crossing. Border guards are not there to make friends, they have a job to do, but most will be hospitable.

We get asked a million questions when entering the USA as well...I have no problem with that, occasionally they choose to go through our vehicle...we are visitors,,,they have the right to ask, and have the right to deny entry..it's a privilege, not a right, to visit another country. They are just doing their job and protecting our countries....and it's becoming increasingly more difficult of a task for them.
Maybe...just maybe...you gave them a reason to ask more questions! They are skilled at interview techniques.

We went to NF last August. We listened to all forum advice and went to the CA customs site. DW made a detailed list of all food items we carried. Got to border control (btw, no traffic), handed over our passports and DDs birth certificates (dog's rabbies cert too). Asked us to roll down the rear windows to see the DDs. Aked where we were going and how long. Then asked for the toll $$ and said we were clear. The DW asked, "Don't you want to see my list", he looked down and away and said no. She was all upset he didn't want to see her list she worked hard to complete.

Yes, coming back to the US was much more difficult (long lines and thorough questions). We even had a dog and guys with mirrors walking around the camper.

Thanks, no pets. DW and me after the last dog decided no more crying over a dog. I plan to take my honey and some homemade jelly. I like a certain brand of pork and beans, it's part of a quick supper, so a case of them. We plan to shop at the grocery stores in Canada. We are taking $800.00 in Canadian money, already have it. We like pork chops and since there is just two of us we break apart a pack. But hey if we don't cross the border we know this campground in Florida that we camp in the winter and it's mostly Canadians, it will be just like Canada. It must be just us but no matter where we go we meet the nicest people.
