Forest River Forums giving our personal info away?

Today I clicked on an ad on this forum from a company called Hawalili.com. It is a clothing vendor. After clicking and looking at a few shirts, an email popped up in my box from them asking me if I was still interested, offering a discount code.

How did this vendor get my email simply by clicking on their ad? The only thing I can think is that FR forums is sharing personal info with vendors when a person clicks on the ad.

Not a big deal, but if that's what happened, I'm kind of chagrined that the forum is doing that without my permission. Unless I gave permission just by signing up on this site somewhere in the pages long mumbo jumbo 'agreement' I may have consented to.

Nah, your email is never shared from FRF. You probably have something from Google added on to your browser.

FRF privacy policy can be found here.

Didn't read it all but you might find that answer somewhere in here.

Most of the ads I see are just plain ole "google ads". So I think the greater issue lies in what google gives out, not necessarily this site.

dagnabbit...here I was about to look all smart, and now I just look late.

Also, as I typed this term, I was wondering where in the world I would have gotten it.

Seems I recall Granpappy Amos (Walter Brennan) saying that quite often on "The Real McCoys".

Lol. I now have an inclination to watch Yosemite Sam after that dagnabbit comment.

Thanks for insight. The all powerful Google ads strikes again. Even when you're not 'Googling' something!

i had that happen years ago with JC Penny. I have never given JC Penny my email address. i had perused something on their website and a few days later got an email from them asking if i wanted the item. was very unsettling.

For me it's not 'unsettling', it's more like, now every tom, dick, and harry is emailing you. I have no problem with targeted advertising. We are all bombarded with advertising, the targeted stuff is at least relevant to my interests. But I'd rather subscribe to such emails on my own than have them shoved down my throat.

NJKris' experience doesn't bother me as much as when my wife and I discussed (not online) purchasing a product and she got an email from an advertiser a few minutes later.

i have no problem with targeted advertising that pops up on my computer pages due to cookies that were left when i visited. I get that - but them able to get my email address.... that is something else entirely. (i must have changed some setting - as this has only happened once and has not reoccurred).

Not too long ago someone here on FRF was having trouble with their water pump.
I quickly googled it and found the price and a link which I then shared in the thread.
For the next 6 months half the pop up adds on my browser and here on FRF were about RV water pumps. I got sick and tired of seeing them when I wasn't the least bit interested in purchasing one.

Now if I'm going to look for an item for someone else I use a private browser window so the adds won't target me later.

The customer loyalty programs at grocery, drug, and some retail stores...can also sell your info for targeted advertising .

It amazes me just what all personal info people give away like on Facebook.

I got spooked by checking into a hotel next door to Lazydays RV in Tampa. Within an hour I got an email inviting me to check out their new RVs. I had provided my email to them in the past but my visit there at the time had nothing to do with shopping for an RV.

There is no such thing as 'free' services. Rmac is running the Chenango FROG rally, and I recommended using the perfect potluck website that worked worked so well at the Brass Ring rally. He pointed out that these sites that ask for your email give your email out and you get bombarded with spam. I already get so much, that I doubt it would make a difference. I guess if I wanted a super secret email that didn't get a lot of spam, I could set one up, but then what would be the purpose of checking it, would be so secret nobody would be emailing me, lol.

If you use the FR app you won’t have these issues.
Or if using a browser get ad blockers, Google hates it!

Just last week I fired off an angry FB private message to Good Sam.
I re-upped with them back in the spring and they were spamming my inbox several times a week, nearly every day.
EACH time I would open the email in my browser and scroll way down to the -fine- print and click the tiny "opt out" link. Each time they would say they received my request to opt out. I still received their spam nearly every day.
It made me sorry I had renewed with them.
They responded to my FB private message saying they had corrected their records..... we'll see.

If I get email from a company that I actually do business with but don't want to read their multiple daily emails about all their news or deals or whatever I just create a folder in my email to automatically send them directly to that folder. Then I just empty the folder as needed.

I've found that those unsubscribe buttons rarely work and only reinforce to the company that you are indeed opening their emails.

Good Sam is the king of spam! I can't use the app. I hate doing anything on a little phone screen or without a real keyboard. I don't know how you folks do it. And the 16GB iphone 6 doesn't have enough memory for more than a handful of apps, lol.
