How to tag other users in a post?

Is there an easy way to tag (or "mention") other users, so that they are notified that their name came up in a thread?

In other forums I can precede the username with a colon - :Qwkynuf or the "at symbol - @Qwkynuf, but neither of those seem to work here. In both cases, I can type the symbol and the first few letters of the name and would see a list of candidates that I could choose from.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I don't think that's possible on this forum. I think the best you can do is quote them, or "Thanks" them. I'm sure a mod will be along to correct me if I'm wrong.

Most of the time when a members name comes up in a post, it's because they are being quoted in the same thread and may have posted previously (thus the quote)

These quotes or their name just in a post can be searched for using the advanced search function on the full website (not app)

When on the advanced search page, type the member name in the keyword search box, make sure to select posts as the return option, and then click the search now button.,

Thank you. I found how to search for posts for specific users - I was looking for a way of, for lack of a better term, "calling" a user who might have input to a thread, but not yet seen it, for example.

So, say someone created a thread in some forum and mentions that they need a tire, and just happened to be in LA. In other forums that use similar software to this one, I could reply and say:

"I'm afraid that I don't have the answer, but I bet @wmtire does"

And that "tag" would show up under your notifications.

Make sense?

Thanks for your help!

You could just send them a private message and include a link to the thread.

We do have a function, where a member can subscribe to tags (and set what tags they want to be notified of).

I will have to play with it though, as I can't remember offhand if you set tags in a post, but if it is more of a thread starter thing.

You do have me curious now. Let me do some more research and I'll get back to you.

Here is what I am talking about so far, and this is taken from the posting 101 section

Tags can be added by the thread starter and can be useful for filtering topics and sorting content in a more granular way.

What are tags?
Tags are a useful way to search for threads with similar subject matter and content. This compliments the normal search system, which searches only for certain words or phrases and/or posts by specific users.

Who adds the tags?
Tags are initially added to threads by the member who starts a thread. Add words or phrases to threads to help describe the content to the tag field when starting a new topic. For instance, if the subject matter is 'photography' then you can add the tag 'photography' to the tag list. But you could also add tags like 'digital image', and 'camera' (depending, of course, on the nature of the thread). This will categorize this thread with all other threads that have matching tags, whether or not they have the word 'photography' in them.

How to use tags to find content?
Tags are displayed in a box near the bottom of a thread page. Clicking on a tag will allow you to view other threads that have the same tag - and which may be related. Clicking on the word 'Tags' in the top of the box will take you to an overview page with a 'tag cloud.' This cloud allows you to see which tags are the most popular - the larger the word, the more times it has been used on threads within the board. There is also another tag cloud on the advanced search page that shows you the tags that have been searched for (or clicked on) the most.
To set your tag subscriptions you will need to use the full site and go to your USER CP. On the left side near the bottom, there is a subscribed tags option.

Once you click on it, you can set the tags you wish to subscribe to and/or the email option. Just make sure to save changes.

It's clearly never been a problem up till now, since I couldn't find any other posts with my question - though I have to wonder if that's just because you don't miss what you never had.

I think that my experience is mostly based on other forums which appear to be either using a newer version of the forum software, or maybe have different options enabled.

I think that is is probably related that there is no setting in my user profile to enable email notifications if someone quotes me in a post.

The image below is what I see on another forum if I type an @ symbol and start typing a user's name:

If I click on one of those names, it will autofill the remainder of the name I was typing, and when I post, the name will become a clickable link that would take you to that user's profile. The user would also receive a notification that they were mentioned in a post.

The specific problem that I was trying to solve was in a thread where a member and his wife had contracted and recovered from Covid. They were asking if any other members had also done so, and when nobody responded, concluded that it was just them. I remembered that NJKris had been hit pretty hard early on, so I replied and tried to mention/tag him to draw him into the conversation.

It's not the end of the world if the function doesn't exist, I was just surprised because it it more or less ubiquitous in my experience, and I was sure that I was just missing it somehow.

Thanks again for your help.
