I was a member of a site that had a "Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down" voting system for posts. There was a setting in the system (unknown to members) that had posts with an excessive number of thumbs down votes to just not show up after a while. Kind of a "self weeding" process.
Can't recall the forum software used but it was unique. In a way it was kind of a self moderating forum.
I think it should be easy to use a like button to show which threads are "highly rated" by readers just like the ratings for products on sites like Amazon. In the listing of threads those with more stars might be attractive to those searching for things to rea than those with fewer or none.
